Haven't seen any recent info on Vietnam. As previously posted I did the overland trip from Pattaya to PP and back. Next trip looking at a 5 day excursion; fly into PP (maybe another overland trip once they get the bridges build and roads paved) stay a day and work overland arrangements to Vietnam, overland back to PP, then fly back to Thailand for the remainder of my vacation. Wasn't to impressed with PP, but didn't have enough time to really get the feel for the place. Vietnam to get another stamp in my passport and life experience. Guess I should ask how safe it is going overland from PP to Vietnam. Any safety tips??

mosquito2002, I suggest it is safer to fly. PP and SR are very safe but the roads in western Cambodia are still a worry. Vietnam is a wonderful place and you will have a GREAT time, personally I have been there 8 times and enjoyed it very much. Must see's in Vietnam include Da Lat, Hue, Na Trang to name a few. Give me an idea of your interests and I will include more suggestions. Accomodation in Saigon ( HCMC) I suggest the Liberty 4 hotel,, but don't pay rack rates ( usually quoted around US$60 ) telephone direct and I get US$25 including breakfast. As with most countries your trip will be largely improved if you learn a few words in their language,,, Vietnamese is somewhat simpler to learn as it uses the same script as English but has "tonal" marks above the vowels. The "Lonely Planet" book makes a good beginner.

Mel, Mainly going to say I've been there and get my passport stamped. Those things you have to do before you get to old. Looking for average lodging (30-50.00 a night), a night on the town (P4P) if something hits my fancy (another one of those things you have to do) and a good Viet rest. where I won't be sick for a week. I planned my trip to PP down to details and of course only the bus ride to Trat went according to plan. So, more of a fly by night trip with a list of things to see and do (if I have the time).

Saigon is a very enjoyable place.... My best suggestion for a girl friendly hotel is the Vien Dong, just opposite the New World...not a luxury place, but for 30/40US$ you got a clean room and no problem to have fun...also, they have a MP that boasts some of the finest girls in town! You got plenty of restaurants and pick up venues just outside the door...and Lost in Saigon is 300 meters on the right Have fun!

In Saigon, I found two P4P-oriented bars with decent talent and prices. Both are near each other around #49 Hai Ba Trung Street. The atmosphere's a bit aggressive, though.

It took about 3 weeks before I got used to Viet Nam, To begin with I was in Hell but after I got some experience I had a hell of a time… meaning: it ended up being an exiting trip for me. What made up all the difference to begin with was my expectations… I thought that Vietnam was somewhat like Thailand, just a bit poorer and therefore cheaper for me to live in… Well, I was right about one thing… They were poor but nothing like Thai people and not at all a cheap place for noobish Farangs. Allow me to explain my cultural shock with some stereotyping. When a Thai sees a Farang he often look up to him and want to help him in any way. When a Vietnamese sees a Farang he often only think of the best way to rob him of his belongings. Hanoi The Capital is for old couples who like peace and quite. Except a big lake, a lot of traffic and some nice restaurants there aren’t nothing to see or do there. One might expect that the old exotic capital could provide some sort of Kodak opportunities, but no no! Even “the lonely planet guide” had serious difficulties finding anything of interest… But hell, that didn’t stop me from taking the book’s suggested 7 miles walk in the hot city, and what did I see? -> 2 statues, 1 lake, and the rest lonely planet sights were all shops selling shoes, towels, mirrors and so on. The first night we were stupid enough to stay out until after 2 o’clock which meant that all the Taxis had gone to bed with the rest of the city. I’ve never seen such a big city so empty. I would guess that maybe 15 people were outside in the entire city at 3.30 am. Well, of cause our hotel had also blocked the entrance to the hotel with a huge iron gate when we finally got back, so we couldn’t get in. It’s also rare compared to Bangkok to find an English speaking person in Hanoi. Even Taxi drivers don’t speak English or actually I think some do but they just pretended not to so they might drive around some extra. One night we had the name and address on a disco written down in Vietnamese and took a taxi. He drove us outside the city all at the same time as we were trying to get him to turn around as he apparently didn’t knew where the hell he was going. Finally we got him to stop but all the way out in the wild country side, we couldn’t get out as we had no opportunities getting back to the city and the moron still didn’t want to take us back. His meter were ticking lovely and he had his mind set finding our disco, even if it meant using all night and 5 billion dollars… I never in my life came so close hitting somebody!! In short I would only recommend this city to an old man with a heart condition who likes to sleep in hotel rooms. I heard it through the grape wine that only 2 hotels in Hanoi have swimming pools and unless you are a king or something you will not have the funds to try them out, and there aint no beach, doh!! Ha Long Bay Okay, I’ll do it a short from now on… Nice tourist place, like Thailand! Beautiful! Saigon, Ho Chi Ming City A more western city of cause and more to my taste! People are still self-centred like Hell but at least there is something to do with your money besides getting them stolen. I have a friend living there owning a couple of bars so he provided us with some invaluable insights. There’s a lot of somewhat cheap and acceptable hotels, and be sure to take one in the middle of the action. Or actually the “action” can be divided into two… the bars and the discos… and in general they are located in 2 spots, but only a short taxi drive apart. But if you are like me you start at the Bars, then the Discos and then back to the bars This is my favourite place in Viet Nam and I could write a lot of what to do and what not to do, What to see and what not to see, Tell a billion tales about BG’s and a hundred about normal girls, and a billion other stories but I am sure that you couldn’t care less Especially as you may only be asking about flying or driving… And I would defiantly suggest flying unless mosquitoes really don’t like you and that you are okay with the fact that most of the driving is done on dirt roads with holes on sizes of small countries! But say the word if you want some concrete suggestions from Ho Chi Ming!

DeeDee, Thanks for the info. Sounds like you also found it took awhile to figure the system out. Never got up to Hanoi and can't say I regret it much. If I was going to go I think I would take a girl with me instead of trying to find one there. However I know you can find them there it is just a lot more work. Here is my FR about Vietnam. Dated but still some usefull info in it. Bimmher does Vietnam........Why?

Quote: from bimmher on 5:30 pm on May 26, 2006 Never got up to Hanoi...... However I know you can find them there it is just a lot more work.
We managed to find a few bars like in Hanoi with girls but it was obvious that they weren’t safe places. I bet that if I walked in there ten times I would be killed about 3 of the times… Not worth it Hanoi’s BGs The way to get working girls in Hanoi is to drive to a karaoke bar. Here you go in a room with a TV and music equipments. Girls then comes in and sing with you while you drink some beers. After an hour or two you take one of them with you home or maybe boom boom at the sofa where you are singing, I don’t know. We tried this one time… A young guy working at a café near our hotel told us about this fantastic place and we took a taxi with him there. He went up to a room with us and in comes two young and bud ugly girls, and he leaves and go have fun in another room. They can’t speak a word English but this doesn’t stop them from starting “singing” along with a Maria Carey song. I am not an impolite guy, but I really couldn’t help bursting out in laughter and tears. Never in my life have I heard anything this bad… A difficult song singed by two girls who didn’t have a single vibe of English in them…. And then the echo just banging away in a failed attempt to mask the fact that they couldn’t sing. Before the first song has ended we decided to get away, and as we get up we immediately find ourselves in what almost can be characterized as head lucks from these girls as they don’t want us to leave before we give them money… Funny, they actually did know one English word… Money! Well my friend through his girl off and go downstairs. I now have two girls wanting tips… Okay fair enough, they did in fact sing for us in almost 2 minutes. I decided to reward them handsomely and troughs 150.000 on the table… To my surprise this only makes them angry… Well, not my problem, so I “gently” fight them off and run downstairs where my friend is in a discussion with must be the mammasan. She wants 80 usd from each of us, we end up giving her a total of 20 and leaves angry. Outside she comes again, but this time it isn’t to get more money but to apologize and wanting us to have some new prettier and more experienced girls. Hell, not a chance mamma! Hanoi Freelancers If you want working girls in Hanoi I prefer this kind. Most are more expensive than in HCMC. They can be found in every disco in Hanoi (About 4 discos). A have seen a lot of pretty freelancers but sadly many of them had the blackest teeth I’ve ever seen. This is due to some medicine many people took about 15 years ago I was told!
Quote: from bimmher on 5:30 pm on May 26, 2006 If you want girls skip it and stay in Thailand (they are hot though in Vietnam)
Yes many are pretty…. In my opinion they in general look as nice as Thais but mostly they seem to have larger tits. The prettiest girl I ever in my life have been with was a 20 year old girl visiting her sister in HCMC. I was actually a bit lucky here. My friend is a f***ing good looking guy so he started seeing a pretty girl in HCMC. Of cause she had a sister (Yes, a real baby sister, family, not only friend), and this sister looked so so good. So much better than her big sister… hehe, sorry friend. I ditched her the first night the four of us were out together to go to my regular girl because I would never believe that I ever could get this girl. Next day she was pissed why I left her and from that on we were together for the remaining 1½ month of my stay in Vietnam. What made it even better was that she actually had more money than I, so I am a bit embarrassed to say that she indeed did pay more for me than the other way around… but not much, I tried to keep up!

I've been in Viet Nam 5 years now and I suppose within that amount of time I should have figured out a few things. Here's my take: I just came back from an overland trip from Saigon to PP with my gf. Bus ticket was $4 and took about 6 hours. We never felt anything less than safe although you will-as you drive through some of the smaler towns-have a look at some profound poverty. The US and Vietnamese governments in addition to the Pol Pot regime really f***ed these people over. I simply cannot help but admire these people's determination and will to survive. Another story... P4P is everywhere in Saigon but since it is officially frowned upon it is much less out in the open. Another poster mentioned some hostess bars on Hai Ba Trung (from number 49 to 91 and Na Na) that are OK if you don't want to spend additional time chasing down cheaper companionship. Some girls at these places can be pretty agressive but most of the girls (especially Na Na) are absolute honeys but the scene is fluid and the girls sometimes change clubs so what's hot today may be tired tomorrow. There are other hostess bars around the neighborhood. They are not at all clearly marked but if you are anywhere near one, a girl (or girls) will jump out of a darkened door and invite you in for a drink. If any of them look good to you, go ahead and take them up on their invitation. You can expect to pay 30,000 VND for a beer (exchange rate is about $1=16,000 VND) and if you buy a girl a "Saigon tea" it will set you back 50,000 VND. If you want to take a girl out of the bar to your hotel you'll be bar fined about 300,000 VND. ST is about 400,000-500,000 VND but I should add that I don't play the field much so I may be quoting prices that are a bit low/high. Most girls are willing to meet you after the bars close (most close at about 12:00AM) or you can arrange to meet the next day before they go to "work". (about 4:00PM) If you plan on just hanging out at these places most of the girls use the Ly Ly Hotel on 163 Nguyen Thai Binh. Being a "butterfly" is not the issue it is in Thailand, so if you see something else you'd like to try the next night, the girls won't hassle you. Most bars have an upstairs or back room where you can get a bj. Expect to pay between 200,000 - 300,000 VND but remember the girls can be pretty agressive and demand something higher. My advice is to simply smile and say that's all you can pay. (most girls' English is very limited) I have found the Vietnamese to be exceptionally friendly and outgoing. In that sense I guess they are just like most people-if you give a sincere smile and are decent, they will return the favor in spades. Pham Ngu Lao Street (known as the backpacker district to locals) is great place to go if you want inexpensive lodging and lots of places to eat and club. It's similar to Khao San Road in BKK. Lots and lots of girls show up at places like Sahara after midnight but asking prices are high-$50 and up. I haven't been to Saigon at Night lately but I hear it's popular place for expats. I've seen more girls strollng the streets of Pham Ngu Lao, De Tham and Buu Vien lately. Buu Vien has bunches of mini hotels most of which are girl friendly. I recently read a post on another site that the park across the street from the New World Hotel (1 block from Pham Ngu Lao) has action during the evening, too. If you want to try something a bit different, ask a xe om driver (motorbike taxi) to take you to a "hot toc" (barber shop) for a bj. There are 4 levels of barbers here: level 1 is legit, level 2 includes hj, level 3 is mostly bj with little attention paid to hair cutting and level 4 is "hot toc" in name only. I've never been to a #4 hot toc but my understanding is that they are pretty grim and cater to VNese only. BJ at a #3 is about 100,000 VND and the tip is about 20,000 VND. Unlike bj bars in Thailand, the girls here are young. (20-25 years old) Again, since being a butterfly isn't an issue here, you could have one girl service you then invite another for a second (third?) round if you're up to it. Enjoy your trip!
