I decided to head out to Costa Rica for the weekend, just to check it out, and to get a feel if I want to come back for a longer stay - and 'intellgence gathering trip', so to say.
The short of it - if you're going to stay in San José, and are going for mongering, it's a waste of time and money - prices have been driven high by American tourist and investor influences (as usual, whatever American touch turns ther countries to shit), and girls cost around $100 to $200, strip clubs are Americanized, and the vast majority of girls are way below my standards of quality.
On the other hand, if you bring your own, and fly to some of the beaches, check out the volcanos, or anywhere outside of San José, you can see some beautiful countryside, and have some (moderately) nice beach-time vacation. You won't see any money savings in food, etc versus comparisons to in the states, unless you really go somewhere off the beaten track.
Essentially, San José's scene is no better than Tijuana, so save your time and just head to TJ, if that's what you're after. I'll see if I can write up more details later, if I find the time.
Essentially, I found myself making comparisons to Thailand, and Costa Rica kept looking worse an worse for it - it also doesn't help that I'm not a huge friend of borderline chunky Latin women (of which there are plenty, here) - though there are some very few thin and attractive girls. Very few.
Cool volcano, though.

Au Bon Pain is American. I think that's a worthwhile venture. I agree though, the rest is shit with the exception of Al Pacino.

Okay. I'm not going to disagree too much with what the Duck had to say but there are some other points that need to be made. I spent quite a lot of time at the Blue Marlin bar and there were some lookers. Most were good to go for $50 U.S. but that was only short time. Usually only one hour. Rates are VERY negotiable and I was told never to pay more than $50. There were some lookers but what I liked the most was there were women from not just Costa Rica but Jamaica, Panama, Dominican Republic, Colombia etc. Basically a nice buffet to choose from no matter what your taste. I saw some really nice looking black women. Another thing is to hire a guide and go out to some of the bars with some of the local women who are not P4P and again there are some stunning women. Is it Thailand? No. To me that is not always a bad thing. I can also zip down to C.R. for a weekend which is a plus.

Yeah, bummer, but there's always TJ, if that's the kid of scene they are after. Personally, I'm here peripherally for the girl action - I'm exploring a lot more tomorrow (not San José, essentially).
Yeah, Brazil is allegedly a hot bed of GFE and hot THIN girls. Screw the fatties populating the scene around here (or, rather, do NOT screw them).

Blue Marlin was fine once traffic subsided, and if you're lucky you can find 1-2 good ones out of every 30-50 fat ones. I prefered Key Largo, for the more relaxed atmosphere, and Del Rey was no different than Adelitas in Tijuana - factory farming.
Checked out also - Atlantis, essentially a US style strip-club, with equally f***ed up strippers populating it (though the visual quality was better - 20% were acceptable, to nice looking) ; (Centro Commercial de) El Pueblo - great to go with a girl, or a bunch of friends - lots of variety in bars, and restaurants and shops, not much else; Vertigo - a nice Disco, but dead on a Saturday Night (WTF?) ; Scarlet, a seedy stripjoint on the outskirts of town, with an awesome staff, but chunky Hausfrau girls. Yeah, I don't think I can hit any more... I'll leave Josephine's for DG and MN/NM to explore.
But there's an Alliance Française right outside my hotel ($50 a night, boutique place, and beats the Marriot piece of crap in location and noise).
Yes, it is correct that there is a wide variety of women from different countries to see and pick from there, but a wide variety of fatty, washed up short time hookers is still not my idea of a good time - yes, short time can be had for $50 for one hour, but all night was $100, though I understand that is negotiable as well.
While CR is only 4 hours+ away and one time zone away from LA (which is why I might go another time for beaches, etc..), it's a pointless waste of time as a mongering destination, unless you're into fatty, chunkiness.

made one vacation to CR, severe (yankee go home) attitude, certainly nothing like the friendly atmosphere of LOS, have also heard Brazil is nice

I know we don't agree on much and I've even suggested "duck season" would be a nice time of the year  , had I known you were heading to SJO I would have given you mucho help & advise on where to go, who to meet and so on. I am a professor at the University of Costa Rica at Del Ray, I hold a Doctorate and I'm the seat of the department of astrological studies.
SJO is as you say for those who don't know their way around. I have many amigos and amigas there and for those of us who know our way around, there are many great providers and places of interest.
In short, we again disagree but believe me if you ever decide to return to SJO, I will help you.
SJO is more expensive than SEA but it's soooo much closer. I leave mi case and 8 hours later I'm deep in Gringo Gulch waiting on one of my Ticas to show up.
There are 100 & 200 $$$ providers but there are also some striking gems for $50 -60. Many great places and a few strip clubs that are not Gringoized.
Guys, I will NOT give out info freely, only to those I fully and completely trust. I've done battle with the duck but I don't begrudge those I disagree with.

A few quick SJO points
Getting out of Gringo Gulch is important. Once you find the local places and local gals you can have a great time.
The Old Park Hotel was noted for it's shows on weekend nights but for many of us it was noted for afternoon pick ups. Many of the local wives and mothers who needed some extra $$$ would stop in and see who would compensate them for their companionship.
Their are many local club that are just off the beaten path with excellent girls at reasonable prices.
There are quite a few MPs that are excellent values also.
Sitting at "the rail" at the News Cafe is one of the best and cheapest way to oogle ladies all day long. Something about the way the latinas dress and walk that makes for excellent eye candy.
There are better places south of the border but they aren't in Mexico IMHO.
Rio, Lima and Columbia are great but SJO is so close.
