Chompoo,

I agree with most of what you say, but my TGF has a different take on age versus the business than do I. This is colored by her experiences growing up in Udon Thoni and the situations she experienced for the several years she worked at Soi Cowboy.

My own personal feeling is that kids belong in school, and after that they can make up their minds about what they want to do (as young adults). Despite my TGF's views, I think one of the reasons she's kept her heart intact is that she started relatively late for a go-go dancer, at age 22 (or thereabouts). So she is perhaps not assessing her situation vs the other ladies at the bar with the same perspective they may have, especially the younger ones. And yes, she has told me who is doing what in her bar and what their age is. The police have begun a more consistent crackdown on this in Soi Cowboy very recently, so maybe we are finally seeing the end of 16 year olds in the farang side of the business down there.

It's a tough topic to discuss, because there is a lot of emotion around it, but I don't view Cambodia as a place I won't go because of this issue. The Khmers have done (and continue to do) a good job  killing each other. But the sense I get is that they are getting tired of that, and the country is coming out of a long dark period. For example, Chamroen, our guide in Siem Riep, took as to a dinner place where Cambodian traditional dance is being revived, along with the traditional music and instrument accompanyment. Chamroen explained to us that most of that was destroyed under our good friend Pol Pot, but that the people in Siem Riep were trying to save what was left of their culture. By spending my tourist dollars at places like that, I am helping (in a very small way) to support those kinds of things.

- Balls.

I think you raise an interesting point. I think people who are interested in tourism (even sex tourism with adult partners) should visit Cambodia and thus allow them to develop alternative sources of revenue, rather than boycott them completely. If we abandon it to just the paedophiles, then that industry will thrive and it will be more difficult for them to "do the right thing," IMO.

that last point was very interesting. i would like to visit cambodia, laos and vietnam but its hard enough trying to convince my relatives that im not going to thailand as a sex tourist. the only time cambodia gets any coverage in the media in britain is when it has something to do with child prostitution. i would love to go, but like people say...'theres no smoke without fire'.
i really dont care what anyone thinks about me, but i wouldnt like anyone to think i was travelling to PP to hurt kids.

Might be going to Phnom Penh next week.  I wonder how's the night life situation.

Anyone been there recently?  Care to provide a friendly update?  Also, what would be good and guest friendly hotel to book with?

I've heard from my driver who lives in phnom penh that K-11 has been raided recently and no other location has been found as of 3/30.  I'll be going to LOS on April 4th-13th with a possible 2 day trip to Phnom Penh in between. Tom

I also have been hearing about the raids in K11.  It sounds like the brothels are open, but not so openly.  The gates or doors might be shut but still be in operation.  You just have to walk by and they will probably slowly open the gate to let you in.

If your driver walks around with you at K11, your price will go up for the action significantly.  ST $5 and LT $20-25 normally.

I think almost all the hotels are guest friendly.  Be advised when you get out of the airport there will be a bunch of guys screaming at you or trying to grab your bag to drive you to your hotel.  That's your taxi service in Phnom Penh.   It should cost like $5 to take you to a hotel.  It is pretty standard price.  Most of the hotels are crappy and will run about $15-30.   There are a couple of really expensive hotels, but I've never been.  The driver will suggest some hotels otherwise.  I remember a couple of names like Hong Kong and Sunshine if you need names.  They are nothing special.

Their economy is run by US Dollars.  So bring plenty of 1's, 5's, and excellent condition 20's.  There isn't a big need to change dollars into cambodian money.  You might want to cash about $10 into riels I believe.  When you pay cash for food and other small stuff, you will get some change in riels.

Cambodia is very third world.  It ain't Thailand.

BANGKOK.

THERE IS NO CONTEST.

Depending of course what you mean by "best," but I've been to both and, well, Cambodia...hmmmm. There's that whole ClEaNliNess issue. You have to draw the line SOMEWHERE.

Maybe didn't spend ebough time in PP, but Bangkok is famous for it, and many people dont even know that PP is a place....third world is pretty damn accurate.

If Thialand is an LDC then PP is a less than LDC....

adhoc,

If you go, I wouldn't plan on being there anymore than 5-7 days, unless you go to Angor Wat in Siem Reip.

After you do the killing fields and other tourist destinations in PP, there really is nothing else to do except.

There ain't no real party places.  The normal venues at night are a few discos, Sharkey's and the main one Martini's.

It can get pretty boring less the ...

Thailand has so much more to do.  Plenty of tourist stuff in Bangkok.  But if you have the time Thailand has plenty of other places to go.  They have beaches and hill tribes and elephant training.  It may sound stupid but it puts a little bit of a break into the P4P and throws the critics back home a little bit of a loop when you shown you were there as a regular tourist.

Also, for a note to all inexeperienced travelers to SE Asia.  I usually book RT tickets to Bangkok for the duration of my trip.  I do not book say Bankok and Phnom Penh tickets back home.

I buy all my tickets to other SE Asian countries from there.  Travel agents are all over the place in Bangkok and very competitive.  If it's not high season and I don't even think that matters, prices to other asian countries RT will probably be anywhere from $150-250.  You can book tickets to leave the next day most of the time.

One of the reasons I don't like to book into other asian countries RT from home is that I think of Thailand as a safe haven.

Competition is fierce in the travel industry in Bangkok.  You also buy one day tour packages and mini-bus-van pickups to like Pattaya from there.  They are pretty good resources.

Those asian airlines are pretty flexible about allowing you to change your itinerary on the fly, and don't go charging you like some other airlines.

My bad, I talk too much again.

[Planned to go to Siem Reap another time for Angkor Wat]

[Yes, I do agree with you on that point after my recent visit to PP]

[Not quite though.  Was at Manhattan's and the scene was amazing!  There were like 20 gals to 1 guy ratio.  Mostly Viet gals and majority were good looking too]

[Having worked and lived in BKK for the past 3 mths, I can't disagree further]

[Yep, that's what I did.  Anyway my trip to PP was an official one so naturally my co. booked me with a RT]

[Yes, totally agree]

[Will check out those sources another time]

[They have to be flexible, times are getting bad for them]

[The more you talk, the more we learn.  Thanks!]
