After quite a few tequilas, bought a fake Monticristo last trip down there. Could tell as soon as I lit up, since it was harsh. Compared with a good one, the cigar looked OK but the band was slightly discolored and the pattern wasn't an exact match. Take a band of your favorite and compare closely, also smell the cigar. Otherwise, might have a better chance with a turbo, check that it fits the tube well. Sorry, I can't remember the name if the place where I got the good ones.
Be aware that customs will, at a minimum, confiscate any Cuban cigars you attempt to bring back to the US (and probably smoke them later), and a US citizen is in violation of the law by even purchasing Cuban cigars abroad, albeit difficult to enforce.

My Cohibas have an embossed band and are not harsh, quite mild even. But what do I know its the first time I have smoked a cigar for about 20 years ! I did get them through a friend of a friend though. The ones in the official shops are expensive even for Cuba.
At the airport I expected to get my quota checked by a bloke at a desk who was checking laptops and goods of other passengers. He took one look at my EU passport and didn't even bother, I got waived on.

There's a good cigar shop on the east side of Revolucion next to the supermarket with the big parking lot at 3rd. The nice hotel is on the same side of the street, perhaps even the same block or very close to it. To reach the hotel's main desk you walk up the stairs to the 2nd floor, and to the right is an interior walkway with skylights that leads to the rooms. I looked at a couple of rooms and thought the ones in back away from the interior walkway would be the quietest.
Thaiaficionado: I heard that story about the surprise hotel guest from the other BTF member. Seems you're a heavy sleeper! BTW, I pm'd you while I was in Pattaya a couple weeks ago, too bad we didn't hook up.
