If you're a United Frequent Flier, they have a great Red Carpet Lounge. Unlike the 2-drink coupon shit you get at SFO, the Japanese put out the wine, cheese, and scotch, and help yourself to as much as you can handle. I got so hammered during a 6 hour layover, I could barely get on the plane.

They even have a high-tech beer dispensor. Put your glass on the tray and push the button, it tilts and fills 90%, then a second spout finishes with a perfectly measured head. Very impressive, indeed.

And I can confirm the train costs about $25 OW into town.

Tourist - thanks for the information. Appreciate it!

Wanderingsam - I'll probably do as you suggested. No need for P4P since my TGF provides it all.

Thaiaficionado - It was great meeting you at Lookie Lookie. If you happen to be in BKK early March let me know. I was a 1K UA flyer for years. Now that I am retired, and search for cheapest airfares, can't even get the 25,000 necessary for FF status. Still trying to use up all my UA FF miles before bankruptcy becomes dead airline.

I agree with Thaiaficiano about the Red Carpet lounge. If you are a Premier Exec or Star Alliance Gold, you get to use the lounge for free even if you are not a member. I usually spend a couple of hours on the free internet terminals there and then take a free shower. They also have free WIFI in the lounge.

If you are in terminal 2, they have a free Yahoo internet cafe with approximately 50 terminals. All you have to do is show your passport. Showers and massage are right next to it for a fee.

Horntoad - Is the free Yahoo Internet Cafe in Terminal 2 only for FF folks, or can anyone use them if they show a passport?

This, shower and massage would be a good way to use up some of the time - as long as I don't have to belong to a FF premier+ plan.

RIT,

The Yahoo Internet Cafe is open to the public and anyone can use it. Once in awhile there is a wait since it is free. There isn't a time limit so I spend three hours there last time. Only drawback is the person at the next terminal can see what screen you are on. I was on BKK Tonight and tried to move to a terminal where there was less traffic.

The shower and massage are separate business entities and charge regular rates. I think the shower was about six to ten dollars and it is usually very busy. I highly recommend it because on my first two trips to Thailand, I didn't use the shower in the United Red Carpet Club. On the last two, I did right before boarding my flight and it made a big difference in relaxing and refreshing me. I would go and pay for a shower if one has a long layover because it makes a big difference.

there is an area after you past customs to leave your carry on luggae for a short-time in the airport to visit outline areas in Japan.
just drop off your bag (about $5) then take train into Narita-shi...small town outside of airport area about 10 minutes out. walk around, buy some stuff, eat and maybe if your lucky find a bar with young hostesess (keep your wallet close and ask prices!)

check out the Narita airport website and get more detail information on this.....

Well, my 10 hour layover in Narita has begun.

I`ve decided just to use the Internet Cafe, perhaps the day room, and the showers before my continuation to SFO.

As previously posted, the Yahoo Internet Cafe is in Terminal 2 (Main Terminal, as there is also an auxilary to Terminal 2). Second floor. You can see the yellow shuttle trains from the Internet Cafe.

Keyboards on the 34 laptops suck a bit, since they are slightly modified QWERTY toshiba keyboards with an extra column of keys before the right shift. Touch-typists will go slightly nuts for a bit until they get use to it.

But, the connection is fast. Pretty busy in the Cafe, although I have yet to see all the stations in use at the same time (you are suppose to give up your seat if others are waiting). Currently 22 in use.

Opens at 8am. Closes at 9pm. And, hard to beat the price - free. Just talked to the staff and they said there is no time limit to use as long as people are not waiting.

There are signs posted saying not to attach any devices to the laptops (like USBs), or to plug your own laptop into the Ethernet. However, before the shop was open I noticed one person with his own laptop plugged in directly and working without problems. He left before the staff arrived at about 7:40am.

You need to register (need passport) and get a USB key that you insert that basically logs you into the machine.

Overall, very nice.

The showers and day rooms are right near the Internet Cafe. 30 minute showers are $5 USD. Rental of the day rooms are $9 USD for the first hour and $5 USD thereafter. They open at 7am and close at 10pm.

Also a small snack and gift shop that takes USDs, although overpriced and only gives coin change in Yen.

When you say "day room," are you talking about something the size of coffin, or what?

I like to fly through Seoul, South Korea, where I can get a room at the Incheon Airport Transit Hotel for about $60 for 8 hours. It is not huge, but it is decent size and very nice (the entire airport is just a few years old). The hotel is right in the terminal so there is no need to clear immigration or customs.

Kansai Airport in Osaka Japan also has a hotel in the terminal, but it is a bit smaller and more expensive than Incheon in Korea.

Mr. Alan:

They call it a "Day Room". Not I. As to dimensions, I just walked over and measured one:

About 9 feet by 7 feet. Contains a twin bed with about 2 feet of floor space at the head of the bed, and about 3+ feet of corridor/walking space from the door past the bed to the separate bathroom.

Bathroom contains a very modern toilet (I think it has heating controls), small sink, and shower/tub.

So, bigger than a coffin but smaller than the typical USA "guest bedroom". Everything looks very new and clean.
