I would wholeheartedly agree. Having been to Tokyo and Kyoto several times each, I would much prefer a return to Kyoto (and surrounding areas) if I had a chance to go back. Unless you are really fascinated by rectangular concrete architecture, Kyoto is the place to experience Japanese culture and tradition, and well as some of the most modern architecture in the world.

Have lived & worked in Aussie land for an extended period. Had been offered Aussie nationality, which I very respectfully declined.

INSTRUMENTAL music is certainly worth listening to. It's somewhat stark and doesn't have much emotion, but neither has Bach (IMO). Japanese wooden flute music is particularly serene.
Japanese theatre (Kabuki & the like) are an acquired taste & certainly won't appeal to the neophyte (for Japanese culture). Still, it's worth savoring.
Finally, Tokyo being wildly expensive is somewhat of a myth. One's got to know where to live & where to eat.
Try the hotel Urashima in the Harumi district of Tokyo. A couple of years back, I paid
$ 40 a night for a single, very clean, very small room, with bath. It's 20 minutes walking from Ginza, 8 minutes by bus.
Forget p4p type pursuits in Japan, not worth the money & most providers are non Japanese.
It never ceases to amaze me that people think Australia has no culture,,,, is everyone so ignorant that they fail to know that Australia has the second ( arguably the first) longest history of all the world?
Ok I am not aboriginal so have minimal claims to that title,,,,,, but did my English and Scottish ancestors agree to alienate themselves from all culture for their new life in Aus ( I think not).Back to the point in question, yes Japanese culture has facinated me since my early child-hood,, probably began with images of "ninjas" and beautiful Japanese Maple gardens,, but grew as I sought out more and saw the precise eticate of everyday riyuals such as the pouring of tea.
. The Mel Gibson movie "Last Samuri " added to my fascination.
You state rooms can be had for $40 ( I assume you mean those ugly green dollars) that is easily within my budget.Looks like Kyoto here I come 2007,,as for P4P,, I have had more than a few Japanese gals here in Aus so no real mystique there,, but I will most certainly be trying to join an " after work" type typical Japanese business-man evening whilst I am there ( and yes I know it will cost probably around 400 of those green ugly dollars).
"Culture is for a poofter " ( well POOFTA) pastime,, you spent too much time with over testosteroned morons ( we have more than our fair share of those).

Yes I just do not get the crapper videos either as the Japanese seem to be a clean as opposed to the Chinese where most all restaurants look like shit holes (No pun intended)
Just got back from Penang and with their heavy Chinese population they imported their filth there. I took a TG there and she comment how dirty all the restaurants were, they even made Thai roadside food stalls look better.
Given that, is why I gave the Japanese the wacky culture title of the world. Can anyone describe a more wacky culture?
