Oh my goodness, why oh why Kiama came up in the recommendation list? ahahah.... IB I don't know how old are you but unless you are 65+ yrs old pensioner just give this place a wide berth. The only redeeming feature is the Blowhole, the town greatest attraction; sea-cliff caverns emitting spectacular 'blows', sea waves that roar explosively through a hole in the cave-roof sending spray up as high as 60 metres and down over the car park ….. where Mel G. & his mate hyperterminal can be found eating fish & chips wrapped in newspaper. This place suck big time, by 9pm it’s as lively as cemetery during a wet evening.

There is a comical imitation of a Thai restaurant, Mango Moon; they operate between 5.30pm to 8.30pm and if it’s busy (presumably having more than 1 table at the time) they can stay open as late as 9.30pm. No, I didn’t try it out but my Thai fiancée and I had a good laugh at the time. Ah, the place is run by Aussies, so one can expect shitty food and even worse service.

IB, just stick to Wollongong and if you crave for some half decent Thai food, served by Thai staff, try Jasmine Rice restaurant in Corrimal Street. It’s always packed with people so it’s a good idea to book a table in advance. Again this being Australia, you have to bear in mind that most things come to a shuddering halt after 10pm or when darkness sets in, whichever comes first. Don’t leave it late.

Doors do shut very fast in Aus for unfriendly people.
Men will ignore,, women will laugh,, children will run away in horor.
But normal people have little trouble.

Kiama is truly for the old,,, or,,, people who like spending hours in fake antique shops.

I suggest get in and out of Sydney as fast as you can,, you need a very long stay here and a nice friendly persuation over time to crack into the fun scene.I live here and actually stay home most nights and wait for my BKK / Saigon / Cambodia trips for easy fun.

I have returned and found Australia very accommodating – except for the fact they kept the habits of their former keepers (otherwise known as the English) when developing the roadways and therefore sit on the wrong side of the car. Keeps it interesting when one rents a car with a manual transmission.

I actually did stay at the Novetal in Woolongong. Decent hotel, but certainly not geared to the business traveler – very expensive internet ($30 Aus per day). Woolongong was a nice little seaside town, and was pretty quite. Most everything shuts down pretty early and the Thai food I had while there was kind of sweet for my tastes.

It actually snowed when I was in Melbourne, but outside of the temperature found the town fairly accommodating.

I actually stayed out near the airport in Sydney much easier on me with the hire car to access. But the cab fair down to the harbor was pretty steep (over $30 Aus each way).

One of my mates from Tokyo is a partner in a bar/restaurant down on kings wharf – a latin restaurant/bar/club called La Cita. Was pretty slow when I was there, but it was a Wends. My friend says they are packed on the weekends and they generally draw far more women than men. One recent Saturday he said there was over 150 people and less than 10 of them were guys. So next time I might just have to make sure I hang around for a weekend in Sydney.

My mate knows that I could care less about football, and that I wear sports jerseys on a fairly regular basis so he bought be an Aussy football shirt (which I wore out last Friday to the RT). I have to make sure to pick up an All Blacks jersey to wear into his place on my next trip.

A couple of general comments about what I experienced in Australia:

I found it to be more expensive than I expected.
Crime seems to be a bigger issue than I thought it would be – even in a fairly small town like Port Kembela, and Woolongong many of the houses had bars on their windows.
I like the immigration procedures – those ETA’s are a great idea. While some might find it a bit off putting to have to pay the fee. I say if you can get away with charging then by all means charge everyone.
The people were generally pretty helpful and seems some of the women find the American accent to be a plus.
Quite a large number of Asians floating around everywhere I went (as a matter of fact when I went into my friends restaurant about 75% of the women there were Asian)
All in all a very positive experience and I was able to pick up a bottle of Absinth at the airport for Toxic to have on hand.

IBFarang,, glad you enjoyed your trip,,, I had the snow turned on in melbourne just for you

Driving on the left must have been fun especially if you took the coast road down south.

The bars on windows etc in the Port Kembla area,, YEP,, that area and a close by suburb called Dapto,, was always a high crime area, basically the inefficient thieves where attracted down there by cheap house prices ( But they ain't cheap anymore).
Taxi's are very expensive in Aus,, I just about never use them, one of the first things I did was get my Thai Mrs driving lessons and got her a license for her own convenience ( or was it so she could pick me up after a night out ?? ).

We do have a very large Asian population,, especially Vietnamese,, mostly they have fitted in here with little trouble other than a few drug dealers etc. Australia took a large load of the refugees after the Vietnam conflict ended ( least we could do ). With the recent labour shortages due to huge increases in mineral sales to China we are opeening immigration more and more.

Did you get a chance to stop and see the views from Bulli pass??? looking down over the Gong?

Glad you enjoyed.

Cheers
Mel

No wonder why the Aus post service is such in poor state, things get delivered in thrice the same time in other western countries. When I send small parcels down to Melbourne it can take up to 1 week / 10 days.... maybe they employ chinese riding push bikes to deliver there.

Mel-ly good job you are NOT a Telstra engineer, as I've just upgraded my broadband (horribly expensive by western standards) acccount.
