Police sources say that more and more students are being lured into prostitution, most of which is carried out during the
day so that it does not attract the suspicion of their families.
Investigations conducted by Mid Day led to an agent, who revealed that the chunk of the racket involves college girls. “Sixty
per cent are from outside the city, while the rest are from affluent Mumbai families,” said the agent, Raja (all names are
fictitious).
According to Raja, many girls are tempted into prostitution
by observing the lifestyles of some of their more affluent classmates.
“They are overawed by the spending capacity of their friends and classmates and look for ways to make easy money. Most
are addicted to cigarettes, liquor, cough syrup or even gutka,” he said. Raja explained that the girls are usually approached
at beauty parlours. The college girls usually work part-time and are only accessible through mobile phones.
A pleasing personality and good looks play a vital role in this profession, and a girl can earn anything between Rs 1,000 to
Rs 10,000 for two hours, said Raja. The agents usually get a 30 per cent cut.
The girls enter into a mutual understanding with the agents, and are warned not have any emotional relationship with their
customers.
Business is conducted through word of mouth and agents entertain only people they know.
The customers are usually businessmen, stock brokers, college students and builders. While most of them seek sex, a few
want only to spend time with the girls, Raja said.
The girls are usually in the business till they turn 25, after which some of them even start their own agencies. “It’s easy to
enter this profession but tough to quit,” said Reeta, a call girl.
“Only people with plenty of money can afford our service, and high level secrecy has to be maintained,” she said.
