I would not go to Japan again unless I have a good Japanese friend to tag along with. You will know how it feels to be persona non-gratia everywhere, shops, eatries, Night-life areas. It is f***ing expensive, food, train, taxis, hotels and women.
I walked the Shinjuku night life area, most touts, usually women turned their head away when I walked by. Shop owners ran indoors. Kinda made me wonder if I forgot to shower that day.
Part of the reason is they do not want to lose face, by not be able to speak English good, the other is not liking anything Non-Japanese.
This is not a country to explore on your own. If you want to go to the night life hook-up with a Japanese partner. If you want to see the culture, join a tour group.
Better to try to bang the Japanese girls here in BKK on vacation.

saw a few lookers today...
my first ever girlfriend was japanese (a cathay bird).
I have a good friend who lives walking distance. he also knows the boss of a few hot discos. I met him a couple of times while on a r&r trip in bkk and he invited me many times.
