Curious to see how it all plays out but right now shrub's response seems to be protectionism as PRC seems to need less of our gadgets than we need of their garments.

Zulu,

Given the currently inexhaustable supply of cheap labour in China, it is no wonder that the rest of the word is sucking in Chinese made goods. Guandong Province (closest to HK) today is the factory of the world, in the same way that Manchester was through the 1840s etc.

On the other hand, the gadgets are only affordable to the (relatively) small number of urban elite living in the eastern/coastal parts. For the time being they are still too expensive for the majority who toil in the factories.

As for protectionism, China has opted to join the WTO and so this is no longer an option for the Chinese government. No surprises then that most development assistance is going to the poorer, western provinces. However, should a country engaged in manned space exploration - at an estimated cost of $2 billion - qualify for development assistance?

One further, frightening statistic we might want to consider: approximately 3000 new automobiles take the road every day in Beijing.

Yup, I share your view of the market situation between China in the west. In the case of protectionism, I was thinking more of creeping US protectionism, which is doomed to fail. Import barriers, whether through tariffs or NTBs, are a tax on US consumers to benefit US producers. This "plays in peoria" because consumers are a huge, generally unorganized bunch that sees only marginal price changes whereas producers are a smaller group, well organized, and feel an immediate windfall.

I also agree with your point on China's space program. The Economist pointedly raised this question in their lead opinion piece a few weeks ago. If China turns their space program into a major money-maker as the Europeans have, great, but all their propaganda to date is about putting a man on the moon, blah blah blah.

>- there are almost no cash machines.

The machines are located inside the banks. There is usually a side door that you can enter to a room with lots of machines (up to 10-15 ATMs).

I think the Machines are turned off at 830pm. Don't ask me why.
