Strongly suggest making it up to Angkor Wat. It truly is spectacular; one of the highlights of my life seeing it (1996). Do be careful; poverty is a great motivator for doing things to survive. Common street sense. I didn't have any trouble in Pnom Penh (spelling), but, then again, it was worth a couple of bucks to have a taxi wait for me, as I learned.
And the Cambodians did look out for me: walked out of my hotel, private taxi (read car) offering to take me where I wanted to go. No, No, none of that for me. Jumped on a motorcycle taxi, had him drop me off at Appoclypse Now (had to see it). Like an idiot, told him not to wait. He left. After 2 hours of boredom, wanted to leave, but how? It was not in a populated area. Certainly didn't want to walk back to the hotel - inviting disaster. Looked out the front door, low and behold, there was the motorcycle driver (he being much smarter than I). He took me over to a place, think name was Cash Box, which had what I was looking for. Needless to say, he earned a big tip. After I got back to BKK, read an article in the Post about how it was not safe at night to be riding around on the back of a motorcycle. Agreed; too dark, too many automatic weapons around.
Central Market is interesting; forget the killing fields (all buried), but the high school/prison, with the nazi attention to detail of photographs prior to execution left an impression on me. Some bravely trying to smile like high school grad photos. But this was LONG time ago.

Living in Dubai, I like it here, but not cheap. I'd recommend China, though I've not been. Again, lot of cultural things to see.

I've already made plans to go to Ankor Wat and PP both. Good testimony on why one should shell out for a driver, especially if you're going to an out of the way place. I've heard it's $20/night. That may seem steep, to a cheapskate like me, but with the lower cost of beer and babes when compared to BKK, most people can swing it.
Thanks for the advice. Any more specifics on Cambo would be greatly appreciated. PM me if you like.

Check out the forum on se-asiaboard.com for more details on Cambo. During my first trip in Feb, I checked out the standard joints -- Zanzibar at SR, and Martinis, Sharkeys at PP. You can't go wrong IMO.
Meanwhile, I'm planning a trip to PI. Can you recommend any good forums? The 3angeles2 board seems impossible to access.

Thanks for the info. I don't do a lot of research on the PI, because for me it was a little disappointing and I've decided Thailand is just a better value IMHO. But it's no doubt better than the countries most of the forum members are from. I suggest all give it a try and make up their own mind. The Phillippinos need your money anyway. Road House and Brown Sugar had the best looking chix, to me, but a lot of the Brown Sugar chix claimed they had long term customers and couldn't go out. You may run into a situation like this in Thailand, but if you're in Pattaya, for instance, there's thousands of other bars to pick from. Angeles is more limited. All the stories of its grandeur come from when the US owned Clark air base and then I could certainly believe it was booming back then. I haven't been since 2001 so maybe it's had a turn around. Give us a field report when you go.
