the questioned law is effective since the beginning of this year, 2005. the quoted story was published on dec 18th 2004!!!
how can anybody be affected by a law which isn't in place yet???
this alone should show you that it is a total fake!
The article was originally published on January 30, 2005 in the Sunday Telegraph. You can see the date under the byline of the article, or look at the date embedded in the html link.

The http://www.telegraph.co.uk web site seems to always show the current date at the top of the webpage, even when viewing an archived article that was published previously. I am not sure how you came up with dec 18th 2004.

If I lived in the UK, I would call the News editor of the Sunday Telegraph and ask him about the accuracy of story. The list the phone numbers, but not email addresses for the editorial/news staff.

No Sir, that is the same link that was posted earlier. It does not directly prove that the article is a fake, in fact it proves the article was accurate. What you posted says this:

"In fact, the origin of this story was evidently a 18 December 2004 article published in the Berlin newspaper Tageszeitung (also known as TAZ) which did not report that women in Germany must accept employment in brothels or face cuts in their unemployment benefits. (Although it claimed there had been "isolated cases" of such, it did not provide any source or documentation to back up that statement.) "

So according to the so-called "original" article in German, "it claimed there had been "isolated cases" of such [women in Germany must accept employment in brothels or face cuts in their unemployment benefits]. So the article you posted (if read carefully) does in fact corroborate that it has happened in "isolated cases". The English language story only cited a few instances (and did not claim how widespread the practice was), so it was in complete agreement with the website you posted.

The jury is in, the article I posted at the top of the thread is accurate, and backed up by the a 18 December 2004 article published in the Berlin newspaper Tageszeitung, that it DID HAPPEN in at least some cases.

Thank you.

From the same page you mention Alan, I quote the summary at the top and at the bottom nad one paragraph from the middle.

"Claim: Women in Germany face the loss of unemployment benefits if they decline to accept work in brothels.

Status: False.

Example: [The Telegraph, 2005]

.......

The Tageszeitung merely presented the concept of brothel employment as a technical possibility under current law; it did not provide any actual cases of women losing their benefits over this issue. The article also quoted representatives from employment agencies as saying that while it might be possible for employment agencies to offer jobs as prostitutes to "long-term unemployed" women, they (the agencies) could not require anyone to work in a brothel. (The agencies noted that brothels used "other recruitment channels" anyway.)

.......

This was another case where, like a game of "telephone," a story was sensationalized for political purposes and passed from one news source to the next, and somewhere in the rewriting and translating process what was originally discussed as a mere hypothetical possibility has now been reported as a factual occurrence.

Last updated: 6 February 2005"

Alan, let it go. You are trying too hard and it is not working.

I just read the original German article and it does clearly state that every women has the right to reject sexual services (according to the law governing prostitution). The "isolated cases" relate to employment in brothels as waitresses, at the reception, etc.

The original arcticle makes the point that the rules regarding employment centers do not exclude the possibility that job openings for prostitutes might be offered to the unemployed. It also stresses that owners of brothels must have the right to use the employment centers for advertising the job openings, meaning employment centers cannot refuse to publish the jobs. But that does not mean job seekers can be forced to take or even consider a job as prostitute. However the situation is not as clear cut when it comes to jobs in brothels that do not involve sexual services (see above).

In any case I think it is an interesting topic and I am glad that Mr. Alan brought it up. Sure, the article he quoted embellished the facts a bit, but that is certainly not his fault.

OK, I found an email address for the Telegraph (stletters@telegraph.co.uk) and sent them this message:

Re: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/01/30/wgerm30.xml&sSheet=/news/2005/01/30/ixworld.html

Dear Sir:

There has been a lot of discussion in various on-line forums about the authenticity of the above article and whether it is accurate and whether these events actually happened.

1. Do you stand by the accuracy of this article?

2. Is Clare Chapman a journalist on your staff, a freelancer, etc?

3. Any other comments regarding those who say the article is a fake, and is only based on hypothetical situations that "could" occur?

Thank You,
Mr. Alan

That's Mr. Alan to you bud.

The article you quoted is sheer speculation. They have not provided proof for any of the conclusions the come to.

You are comparing some third rate blog with The Daily/Sunday Telegraph, which is the largest quality newspaper in Britain.

I am not making anything of this other than what was printed in the Telegraph. I thought it was interesting. Whether it is accurate remains to be seen.

None of so-called evidence presented so far to discredit the article proves anything other than it is the opinion of the person who posted on Snopes.com that the article is not true.

No respectable journalist would debunk any story without first asking the author or publisher for their comments and/or for proof about its authenticity. Since Snopes.com didn’t do that, they are not a reputable source on this subject.
