try the aston hotel and the new jw marriott. they are both 5 star hotels in the centre from jakarta along jalan sudirman. as the jw marriott is brand new it has special "opening rates" at usd 60 per night. othrewise the hyatt hotel (not the grand hyatt, as they have 2 in town) also is around usd 40-50.

how can i get the "opening rates" -- I checked online and it is $130.   I would like to book for September myself as $60 would be an awesome deal.   It's a nice hotel.

just came back from a 4 day trip to jakarta. actually the opening rate in the marriott is over. best try is walk inside the hotel and try to negotiate with them. you will then get a rate of about usd 80++. also good deals in jakarta are grand hyatt hotel at usd 96++ and the mulia hotel at usd 99++.
after all i think considiring the status and location the grand hyatt will offer the best value!

Hey Griffin  -- $96 for Grand Hyatt?  That  is extremely good.  I haven't been able to get that, and agree it is the best hotel.   Also Marriott at $80 is still pretty good.

I usually stay at the Gran Melia executive floor for $115 which includes free internet, free drinks (very useful) and snacks..  But I'm sick of it and don't care for the pool much.

Was going to try the Meridian for $105 but now you have me thinking...

yep, i stayed two nights in the grand hyatt, paid with my amex card, that meant i got an upgrade with free breakfast on the vip floor plus another free night on the weekend by using amex! this is a promotion for hyatt gold card members using amex card.
i have to admit that the rate i am using is the citibank corporate rate, but once again some negotiation will put you at the same rate. just mention the citigroup corp rate!
club wise there are some new editions. a new place callled  embassy opened jsut some weeks ago. same crowd like stadium, young, corwded, sticky, hardly any aircon and a lot of smoke!
i still prefer hard rock, cj, retro, jj"s in this order. always a lot of pretty talent around! most of them freebies!

Thanks Griffin, I'll give the Hyatt a shot and see if I can get that price.

I go to Jakarta every month, so agree with you on the scene.  Although Stadium is the kind of place I'm happy only go to a couple times in my life!!!  Tiga Puluh isn't bad either if you haven't been.  I like Retro as my late night option...   Went to Embassy twice wasn't overly impressed although all the locals i know (expat and local) like the place a lot..

Try the classic hotel in jakarta. 3*. Bed n Breakfast for just under 30$. Good location and they dont bother you with the guests you bring in !

Also try the Golden hotel. last I heard it was 265,000 Rp for a nite. 3* again. Bed n breakfast. Going by current rates, that'll work out to 32 $.

Be well.

I wouldn't give two cents for the security situation that is brewing in Indonesia at the moment. The supposedly democratic regimes that replaced Suharto (who simply got old and couldn't hold onto power -- but he would have crushed Islamoc terror out of hand, so he will be missed -- these reform regimes have conducted 'ethnic cleansing' in E.Timor against Catholics, using thinly disguised government armed and trained militias -- so what sort of action do you think they will take against Al Qaeda connected terrorists such as the ones who just perpetrated the carnage in (Buddhist) Bali against foreigners for the crime of enjoying the nightlife?

Today Bali, tomorrow Jakarts, yesterday Aceh, wake up and smell the Java, people. The southern Phillipines, Malaysia, Indonesia, all of a piece. Only place that will not tolerate terror is Singapore.  Even Thailand will have to get off its ass and clean house.

Chateaujade...........you're right.

Jakarta has been known to be rather violent during period after Soeharto was evicted after 33 years of power handling. He did handle the country with an iron hand in a velvet glove. In those days, you could get away with anything u wanted to do, which is again pretty much the case today. The only policy the govenment asked you to follow (as an unwritten law) was not to criticize their working pattern and not to be involved with groups trying to over throw Soeharto. If you got caught then there was hell to pay ! Seemingly Soeharto's Son in law B.J Habibie, then Abdurrachman Wahid and now Megawati are unable to control the underground Islamic groups which rake havoc in the country.

Of my visits there lately, have noticed a few bars and discos being open till midnite, some till 1 am and some till 2 am. It seems that the timing allocated by business by these so called "cleansing" or "jihad" groups is based on the weekly payments they receive from the bar/disco owners.

And there has been a bomb blast again in the Southern philippines.

God bless us all.

CJ,
Bali is primarily (90%) Hindu. Buddhist presence is very small there.
