Here's what happened. Somebody called someone they knew that works at this hotel, they needed a room for themselves or a friend, and that confirmed reservation just mysteriously disappeared. Viola. Suddenly, a free room.
Like I say, here's what you do. NOT angry, but FIRM:- Ask for the manager. He won't be there, but you will be handed off to a supervisor who has some authority
- Give him your confirmation number, fax, whatever. Explain that you have a confirmed reservation and you expect it to be honored. He will give some song and dance about "you must have canceled; can't understand how this happened, etc"
- Explain that you have been in the air for xxx hours, YOU did not cancel, no one from your office did, you are VERY tired, and ask how he will correct HIS hotel's error.
- When he offers a taxi to take you to another hotel (at his expense), say you expect him to make the reservation there for you, AT THE SAME RATE, for the same type of room, until you can get back to HIS hotel, because you enjoy staying there so much/have heard how nice it is, etc. bs, etc.
- At this time, you should have paper and pen out (if you don't have, ask the desk clerk who is watching all of this to get you some), and start writing down names.
- STAND FIRM; NOT angry, but don't let them push this off onto you. By now, a good manager will have gotten you a room at a sister hotel, and arranged a driver from his hotel to take you there.
Not that I'm paranoid, but make sure you will be paying the SAME rate (specifically ask how much the room is there; ok, less than 50 dhs, I'd let slide; 100, no. Obviously, if it's less, but politely let it be understood you expect the same room standard). It's THIS hotel who is making the arrangements for THEIR guest, not you yourself.
Get the manager's name, and his phone number (specificly ask for his mobile), so if you have any trouble at the other hotel, you can call for clarification.
- If you're getting a run-around, start with the "very disappointed; I have to write a trip report, and my travel office (whether you have one or not), will be very interested to hear that your hotel here, if it's a chain, just use chain name, is not honoring confirmed reservations. Again, your name is spelled..."
- If still no luck, ask to speak to HIS supervisor. If none available, at least get the name, when he will be in, so that you can clarify this situation
- If you get blown off, it is worth following up; MAYBE you can still get a room, with an upgrade. Bring your other hotel's bill; don't count on any refund for a price difference, but suggest perhaps something along the lines of a dinner voucher or 2, some laundry, etc.
In my youth, I did let myself get blown out the door, until a friend who understood showed me the light:
Remember; it's a business. A hotel WANTS repeat business; doesn't want any bad PR (just like a P4P girl). Don't be hostile; don't make threats (Posting on the internet is NOT a big deal). I know, for me anyway, takes some control, just be firm. Like I say, once you let them blow you out that door, most likely, all is lost. That polite squeaky wheel right in front of them is very hard to ignore.

I can't see any reason to go to TGIT except in the afternoon. Went there once at night, looking for a girl who'd I met there in the afternoon. Won't make that mistake again.

Can't comment on the LT to ST aspect but I reckon the ST I had with here was very good and I cretainly got my moneys worth. It's only accomodation problems that have prevented me going back for more.
So in conclusion you probably won't be short changed for ST but beware if LT is your aim.

What would other members suggest if confronted with Worf's problem: showing up at a hotel with a reservation, and being told "No reservation"?
Do know there is at least 1 member who works in the industry. Any advice?

From what you wrote I thought you had worked in the industry yourself......nothing more to be said....spot on.
If you do get no solution you can always write to the regional / head office of the chain - but as you say - once you've walked out of the door 90% of your leverage goes with you!!!
I did also advise in an earlier post to call direct - do not trust these on-line booking agents that ask you to complete a form and they will confirm your request in 24 hours - you might as well call direct - you will cut-out the middleman & reduce the risk of an oversight.

I am back in town for a short visit and decided to have a look around yesterday evening. I was tired and didn't fancy a late night so I went out early. There were several SW in the Al Ain parking lot even at this early hour (around 8:30). It looked like there were some on the street behind Spinnys too.
Looked in York very early on, no Chinese initially, several Africans, quite a few CIS including a couple of I have not seen before. The first Chinese arrived around 9. I decided I was not really in the mood for the York so I moved on to Jockeys. There was a very selection poor there. One slight, oriental CIS was the best of the bunch. Then two good looking orientals came in (95% sure they were CIS). a few guys approached and were quickly brushed off, they then spotted a couple of guys and it was clear they had a pre arranged meeting. What was interesting was the way some of the other girls were watching them, both Chinese and CIS, and obviously discussing them (new, serious competition??).
There was no sign of Smiler or her friends. One very tempting CIS came in around 10 but I was dead on my feet by this time and went home.

Missed us again mate. We were at the York around 8:30 pm last night.
Worf, who arrived on thursday, BANGERSnMASH who arrived on friday early morning were both there. And so was 11bravo.
We should get a badge or something to identify other forum members.
It was lovely to meet with Worf and BnM for the first time. And the arrival of bravo started the exodus of chinese to our table. I took the opportunity to get the number of one of the chinese I have been eyeing for some time. Asked her if it was ok to call her in the afternoons. She said no problem.
Worf hooked on to another chinese. She knew bravo and came over to say hi to him. Lovely young lady. BnM wanted some CIS cuisine so gave him one of my contacts. Dont know how it went with the two of them. The CIS I recommended to BnM is a very pretty young thing with an admirable rack. BnM said he had a weakness for racks. I am sure he got more then a handful. I have been with that one only once in the past and the impression I had of her was very favorable.
This same CIS sauntered into a forum friend's room on friday evening when I was having drinks with him. Seeing her again after a gap of nearly 6 months I was very tempted. So tempted infact that I was on the verge of suggesting that our forum friend take a walk around a block or maybe ten blocks while I renewed my acquaintance with her. But it was friday and I had other commitments so resisted the urge. This friend is from another forum and does not post here.

Short report, very light on content unless you want to hear about my heroic efforts (successful happily) to teach N from F´s house how to do a proper CIM finish.
Busy trip, and I was basically shacking up with N the whole time. I did get to see JSF and Bravo for short periods when not engaged in my selfless quest to improve N´s bj technique.
Hotel update, the Ramada Continental remains friendly, with only a passport copy (importantly NOT visa copy) and these are then tossed in the trash when the lady leaves.
Sofitel remains Friendly, with a capital F. No copies, no troubles... but it could be just because they love me! 
Great to to see JSF and Bravo, I am sorry for being such a hermit, but next time will be different!
Sorry to have missed the ad-hoc forum meeting at the York, those are always fun. Hope to meet the rest of the crew next time.

The death of dxb P4P has been greatly exaggerated

Met up with JSF (always a pleasure), Bangers&Mash (pleasure to meet you), and Worf (again, pleasure to meet you) Sat. night at York. As usual, the volume too loud, so impossible to carry on a conversation across the table; limited to shouting into the ear of the person next to you. Maybe management is under the illusion that the prime reason for going to 1st floor (or 2nd, depending on your heritage; so 1 floor up from ground) bar is for the band, with the ground floor bars for conversation. I don't think so. 1st floor bar is the meat market, band providing some fill-in amusement while waiting for your take-away.
I was there from about 9:30 until 11:00. During those 90 minutes, saw:- 3 ladies I'd pulled before and would (will) pull again
- 2 other ladies I'd pulled before; would not be my 1st choice, but still nice
- at least 3 others who have found a place on the to-do list, especially one petite one in black dress (next free opening on my dance card).
3 of the 8 were spotted within the 1st 30 minutes (i.e., before 10pm). My guess at the ratio was at least 2/1 F/M. Certainly seemed a buyer's market; very few couples disappearing out the door (although I did see a triple do so). York not crowded at all; in fact, a bit sparse, with plenty of room to move. Just like a fine, autumn hunting day (except it's almost summer, at 11pm, still hot enough to break a sweat while walking).
Had a few stop by our table; believe more would have done so except that the landing gate was occupied by one I consider an a-list. She was trying to sign a deal. With the gate occupied, others just circled. Once again, others will not intrude, so:- Not Interested - just say "No thank you" and have her move on.
- Not Tonight - say you are there, tonight, just to drink, then get her mobile number for when you have time. She'll move on; if not, encourage her to do so.
- Maybe - it's early, you want to keep your options open. Again, I tell her the truth, "Maybe, but it's early; right now, drink and listen to music". If I'm smart (not always), will still ask for her mobile number. Obviously, a trade off: if you think she's attractive, so will others, so you might miss that chance with her (why I should get the mobile). But you do want her to move on. Most will.
- This One - Make the deal; out the door.
The whole point is, you do not want to get trapped by one if you are not going to pull her. Some will try and hang on to you, thinking you are their best bet (I feel sorry for those if I'm the "best" prospect of the evening). If they don't take the verbal/non-verbal hints, then it'll be me who walks away. As I'm there for business, I want to fly solo until ready to off-load some of that excess fluid.
It's in both parties' interest to not lose time if there is no interest. Word will get around about who is a serious punter, and who just wastes a girl's time.
We all left at the same time. Offered to drop Worf at Seaview Hotel with a recommendation of the band there on my way home. Driving over (all of 5 minutes), thought I'd go up and listen to 1, maybe 2 songs; 90 minutes later, I was still there (they do put on a good show). Small room, loud; the sound meter behind the bar is always pegged.
Unlike York, Seaview is a P4P sideline bar. By this, P4P seems to be a sideline to the main attraction of the band. York, Imperial, Cyclone other way around. So, I'd say the M/F ratio was the reverse of York; maybe 2/1 M/F. Fairly even mix of chinese, african, cis, maybe 10-15 ladies overall. Not a large selection, but still, if I had wanted to go home with someone, there were possibilities, including a couple nice CIS (OK, -stanis, which does not step outside my profile). That did NOT include the previously pulled chinese who came over, the one who did not understand the morning wakeup concept (previous post). At first she didn't register, but, as time passed, the memory returned. Market must be bad if she was trying for another engagement with me.
Just after 1, went home alone, dreading the 5am alarm. Currently feel like what a dog leaves under a bush.

Another thought, rather obvious:
You have so many more possibilities IF you have your own place (hotel, apt, whatever). Any WG, not just those with their own place, is an option. Unless you are pulling an a-list, her place can be pretty dismal, along the lines of a mattress on the kitchen floor, or sheet partitions in a divided room. And, for me, that is the major drawback of dxb. Hotels are not cheap, decent ones, anyway; not like BKK. Plus there is the GF'ly concern. That's why I've stated that coming to dxb just for P4P is not a given. Yes, wide selection of WG's, various nationalities, colors, forms. Readily available, not THAT expensive. However, the overhead of housing is. Best for a business trip, or an R&R, with the company paying. Solutions, I don't know.- Admiral Plaza used to be a reasonable option; now, don't know.
- Dallas Hotel. 3 years ago, it was pretty dingy. But 150-180 dhs (so I've heard) ; as a crash/P4P pad, MIGHT be do-able, if your standards are MINIMAL and the only thing you planned to do in the room was sleep/screw.
- Have heard of some small hotels around Astoria Hotel. Had met couple of punters in TGIT staying in the vicinity. They didn't have the name - down this street, then left/right... but said, while spartan, reasonably clean, with a/c.
Another consideration is location, as in traffic. Sharajah might only be 20 minutes from dxb on a Friday morning, but at other times, it can literally be hours. The creek splits dubai into Diera and Bur Dubai; only 3 ways across: 2 bridges and a tunnel; they can get FULL (ok, also small boats for foot traffic, but that is a "walk of shame" I would not consider). CITY is on Bur Dubai side. Hyatt Premiere, airport are in Diera. The dxb marina, or the hotels along jumerah beach, are a bit of a ride. Only a couple of main roads into town, and they do fill up with traffic. Even at 9pm yesterday, in Bur Dubai, it was stop and go (not being able to make it through intersections due to the "close to gridlock" conditions). Plus, the beach hotels, those taxis can get expensive. 40/50 dhs one way (maybe you can take a free hotel shuttle in; coming back, you have stones if you do that...). Considering 80 dhs for your round trip, 40 for her return (and you will pay it, one way or the other), that 200 ST from afternoon TGIT suddenly is not such a deal.
Closing factoid: Song "Zombie" by Cranberries, as done by:- band at 1st floor York: good
- band at ground floor York (Music Box) : better - the female backup singers, down on hands and knees, doggie style,...
- band at Seaview: best; not erotic like Music Box, but that female bass player can really play, sing, and put on a show in her own way
