The UAE will soon introduce a new set of stringent regulations, under which women entering the country on tourist visa would now be required to meet certain conditions to help curb the nefarious activities of some women who misuse their status, said a senior official. "Once approved, the proposed regulations, which have already been forwarded to the cabinet, will help in reducing the practice of some women who stay for longer period in the country and are found involved in immoral activities," said Major-General Saif Al Shafaar, Assistant Under-Secretary for Security Affairs at the Ministry of Interior.

Speaking to Khaleej Times yesterday, on the sidelines of a symposium organised by the Police Officers' Training Institute on 'Combating Human Trafficking', Maj-Gen. Al Shafaar said being a tourist haven, a number tourist companies are involved in such activities for the sake of profits.

However, he said the situation was under control as authorities regularly carry out intensive raids on anti social elements.

The two-day symposium, being organised in collaboration with the Police Research Centre, under the patronage of Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, aims to identify the main causes of human trafficking crimes and their effects on the society.

It also aims at creating awareness among the various security and law enforcement organisations, to prepare themselves and maintain appropriate mechanisms in place to deal with the gravity of the worldwide phenomenon.

Elaborating on the proposed measures, Maj-Gen. Shafaar said a woman tourist, who has already visited the UAE, would not be allowed under the new regulations to enter the country before a gap of three months.

"Another regulation stipulates that woman tourist should also be in the age group of 30 years or above. The age of women, in a bid to properly enforce this clause, would now be strictly verified," he said.

Women tourist will undergo eye screening, which will help to track them down and assist the authorities in apprehending them, he said.

Maj-Gen. Al Shafaar also revealed that to protect child trafficking, the ministry has chalked out a draft bill concerning camel racing, to protect jockeys and avoid trafficking in people that will be adopted soon.

Under the directives of Shaikh Saif, DNA test will be conducted to verify the relationship between the child and his carrier, which is considered an advanced step in fighting human trafficking, he said. He hailed the efforts exerted in the field of combating human trafficking noting that the UAE has been placed among countries that fully abide by standards that guarantee rights protection.

Not sure when the last raid on Cyclone, Imperial Suites, Rumours, Jockeys, Premier, The Garage, etc, etc - get my drift??

Concerning the three month grace period between visas - they have not been able to overcome the problem of the bona-fida business woman reguarly visiting Dubai.

I wouldn't get too worried - I have been here 10 years and keep reading such articles from time to time - but nothing changes!!

Well, I'm glad they are cracking down on anti-social women. At least it seems beheadings, as long as they are committed by men, are still good to go.

Not that our country's (US) priorities are all together either.

Is this the end of P4P in Dubai? Not by a long shot IMHO.

The use of biometrics is becoming more common, but the idea is to avoid the problem of visa "overstayers" returning with a different passport under another name (not too hard to obtain in many third world countries.)

SteveSTX has a good historical perspective here, status quo is the name of the game. Well organized "mafias" will continue as before, like they do in every society. We may see a drop in ladies from predominantly Muslim ex-CIS states, but Chinese for example are not having Visa difficulties per se at the present.

The authorities will do what they feel they need to do to make a suitable gesture in deference to the prevailing laws and mores, but I do not expect the Cyclone to close down next week. They break no laws, they are not required by statute to check documentation at the door. We may see a tightening up of hotel security procedures, as they do have statutory responsibilities as to identification.

Ps. The three month "waiting period" will probably be applied only to tourists from selected countries. I have been in and out of DXB several dozen times as a "tourist" since they extended "upon arrival" tourist visas to people from many countries, sometimes with only a one week gap. Never a problem, nor, I suggest, will there be in the future. Commerce gentlemen, is the name of the game.
