A Vietnamese friend told me, “You can do anything you want here, just don't talk about it.” You can certainly find P4P here easily enough; places in Saigon like Apocalypse Now, the Sahara and Lost in Saigon are fun places to visit that cater to the expats, backpackers and tourists that stay in the area. Bars can be found in district 1 with girls spilling out the door braying “Dah-ling!” to any male passersby. You can for sure find some cuties at these places, too. The other night at the Sahara my gf and I found this delicious little honey wearing a loose fitting dress with a deep plunging neckline that left little to the imagination about what her tits looked like. She was ready to party but wanted $80 LT. Some of the girls at Apocalypse are asking $100 on weekend nights. It’s the same at Liquid and 23rd Floor at the Sheraton. Are they getting that kind of money? I don’t know. This isn’t a discourse on what girls should or shouldn’t be getting from customers. That’s strictly a personal choice. But why come to Viet Nam and be limited to a few places where most of the girls are either jaded or bored and more demanding when there are so many more choices of venues in LOS?
If you want instant gratification, then Thailand is probably the best place to go. There are so many places that cater to foreigners that you’re bound to find what you’re looking for. In Viet Nam, discretion is a fact of life. Topless bars are simply out of the question. The government recently announced a crackdown on karaoke clubs (except for foreign owned ones so as not discourage investment-and yes, I agree that the rationale is quite odd) because some government officials were inviting the female attendants into the rooms for both singing and “humming”. Public opposition was unusually vociferous and the government eventually backed down, but the point is that the government isn’t too bugged by P4P as long as you make it look like it’s not happening. There’s a related story about the government’s announcement of a decline in drug usage here. It’s not because there are fewer users; it’s because the government had so thoroughly alienated and marginalized that group (labeling them as “social evils”) that the drug users stopped reporting their usage and requesting help/support and went deeper into hiding. The government finally was forced to admit their policy of “smash the social evils” was a failure because the reported decline in drug usage and the huge increase in the quantity of drugs being seized or confiscated were clearly contradictory. This isn’t meant to be a discourse on systems of government, just an insight into how the Vietnamese psyche works.
So, by now you’re probably asking yourself, “Why the hell would I want to go to Viet Nam?” I can offer one very good reason-if for you the journey is ALSO the destination, then you’ll find much to like here. Unlike most places in LOS that cater to Thai clientele (and aren’t happy to see farangs) foreigners here who are willing to venture outside the confines of the places listed above will often be rewarded with genuine, delighted and accommodating smiles of the locals-both guys and girls. Why don’t more foreigners frequent the out of the way places? Aside from the language barrier, remember that discretion is the operative word. Who would know-except a Vietnamese-that a non-descript café would serve wonderful “ca phe sua da” (iced coffee with sweetened condensed milk) downstairs and that the same sweet, young waitress would take you upstairs and suck your cock to your heart’s content for 100,000 VND. ($1=15,700 Viet Nam Dong-please spare me the “Dong” jokes) There’s also the clubs where you can invite a girl you fancy to come drink with you. No, not the “lady drinks”, but drinks like beer, brandy, and cognac. (which seems to be all the rage now) The massage parlors are really for HJs only, but some girls are willing to meet after work. Of course, there are obstacles. For one, say you wanted to invite the love of your life (or at least the love of the last 10 minutes) to your hotel. That’s not likely to happen as this is officially frowned upon. Again, discretion is the key. A smile and politeness go a very long way here. What may be OK one day may be a total no-no the next. Such is the way of Vietnamese life. There are many mini-hotels that your new friend may or may not know about which raises another whole set of problems. You cold stay at one of the large 4-5 star hotels and just bring her to your room as no one’s likely to notice anyway. But you’re paying for that privilege. Rooms start at $75 a night at the New World and go up from there to more than $135 at the Sheraton.
But if you’re still intrigued after all this, my gf and I would really enjoy showing you around the part of Saigon few foreigners know. We really enjoy meeting people and introducing them to what we like to call our adventure. We aren’t asking for any money. We just get a kick out of showing off this strange and exotic place we call home. Really. I’m American with a semi-functional use of Vietnamese and my gf is Vietnamese. She’s definitely off-limits (yes, really) but there are plenty of very beautiful fish in the sea here to coin a tired old analogy. When Oz shows up in HCMC, I always drop everything. It's a great way to visit the bars... "But honey, I don't want to go to those places-I'm going only because my buddy's curious." I had planned to take Oz to one of the cafes in district 8 but we never did get around to doing it. I drive a motorbike and the helmet laws are now strictly enforced. Two foreigners-1 without a helmet-on a motorbike is a sign just screaming "Mess with me!" Anyways, always a good time when Oz comes around. 29 bar on Dong Khoi seems to be the hottest working girl bar at the moment. Lots and lots of cuties but be prepared to pay. 1 gal at another bar down the street wanted $100, $20 bar fine and $20 for st hotel. No point in arguing that the street walkers in district 3 will be thrilled to get 400,000 VND and the cafe girls in district 8 (strictly oral-haven't tried takeaway) will worship you for 100,000 VND.
