I read this article on the internet.
"Relationships With Lao Citizens: The Lao Government prohibits sexual contact between foreign citizens and Lao nationals except when the two parties have been married in accordance with Lao Family Law. Any foreigner who enters into a sexual relationship with a Lao national may be interrogated, detained, arrested, or jailed. Lao police have confiscated passports and imposed fines of up to $5000 on foreigners who enter into disapproved sexual relationships. The Lao party to the relationship may also be jailed without trial. Foreigners are not permitted to invite Lao nationals of the opposite sex to their hotel rooms; police may raid hotel rooms without notice or consent.
Foreign citizens intending to marry Lao nationals are required by Lao law to obtain prior permission from the Lao government. The formal application process can take as long as a year. American citizens may obtain information about these requirements from the U.S. Embassy in Vientiane. The Lao Government will not issue a marriage certificate unless the correct procedures are followed. Any attempt to circumvent Lao regulations may result in arrest, imprisonment, a fine of $500-$5000, and deportation. Foreigners who cohabit with or enter into a close relationship with Lao nationals may be accused by Lao authorities of entering an illegal marriage and be subject to the same penalties.
Foreign citizens who wish to become engaged to a Lao national are required to obtain prior permission from the chief of the village where the Lao national resides. Failure to obtain prior permission can result in a fine of $500-$5000. Lao police frequently impose large fines on foreign citizens a few days after they hold an engagement ceremony with a Lao citizen based on the suspicion that the couple probably subsequently had sexual relations out of wedlock. "

In other words, what people should realize, especially the regular naysayers, and doomsayers, is how good we have it in LOS, eh?

So, you are saying that you can't spend a few days' worth of visiting without *having* to have sex with her?
After all, it seems that sexual intercourse is the main sticking point, so you avoid that, and you should be safe, right?

Having stayed in Vientiane, Pakse, Savannakhet and Luang Prubang with my LG many times over the last three years, I found no problems whatsover. In fact I had hardly remember any Laotian including the police giving us a second look.

I'd heard about all the problems in Laos, and was a bit worried. Just finished a 4 day trip up there. Had a freelancer in Vieng Chan drag me around one night, ended up in a short (long) time room above the disco after it closed. No problems with that. No interest from the police, even though I was on the back of her moto. They were waving down all sorts of other motos for bribes, etc.
Although I've heard it said that the police only bother you if you're actually serious about the girl (don't care about tourists just having fun). Guy with a Lao wife told me that once you shacked up together, you typically had to pay $500-$1000 a few times a year to bribe the police/block captain/whatever. Depending on whether or not he liked you.

OK I’m going! The LG called and said she really wanted me to meet Papa, so I’m changing my plans and have a flight to VTE about eight hours after I land in BKK. I will visit LG’s family for one day and take them out to dinner before a flight back to BKK in the morning with LG. I will be staying in a hotel near the village the one night…

My experience was the same as TJ's. Met a LG (thru face-pic). I was there on a 3-day stop in Feb. Rode all over the city on the back of her moto - no problems. And no problem with her coming back to the hotel with me (aside from them wanting to charge me a "joiner" fee). I am heading back to see her again in May.

I never made it to LaOS in my last trip, but now plan to visit on my May/Jun trip. This time it will be three days in LaOS, three in BKK, and three in Cambo (To see Angkor Wat).
