I've been getting lots of helpful responses from fellow mates here, so I will give this one a shot.

For all the seasoned travelers to Cambodia, I will be in Siem Reap for a couple of days right after Singapore and Thailand.

Read about this malaria risk, but it seems too alarmist. I just plan on taking a DEET repellant and proper clothing.

I sure as hell won't be venturing into the deep jungle.

Am I wise in giving malaria pills a pass and sticking to a mosquito repellant?

Feedback will be appreciated.

Mike

Hi I have travelled to Cambodia 7 times and not once have I worried about malaria.

I havnt heard about any travellers getting it and speaking to local expats they dont seem to be to worried about it.

If you are worried take some repellant with you.

My exgirlfriends father is an expat in cambodia. He has malaria.

You don't want to get malaria.

I didn't see one skeeter during my trip to Cambo, even during an extended trip on the Tonle Sap. My own practice is to carry DEET and a bottle of doxycycline, but to not take the doxycycline unless I hear of problems in the area that I'm visiting.

I got eaten alive in Siem Reap at an outdoor Bar. Thing was I only felt about one or two bites but the next day noticed I had been bitten many times.

I take malarone while in areas that have a malaria risk. I have taken Doxycycline in the past. I didn't like the Doxy as you have to keep taking it for something like a month after you leave the area. Also it had the side effect of making me get a sunburn even more then I normaly do.

Malarone cost a fortune but you only have to take it one day before entering the area and then for only one week after. Very low side effects and is considered very effective.

The risk is very low but I wouldn't want to get Malaria so rather play it safe.

I know someone who came back from Cambodia a couple of years ago. He caught malaria there.

Medication is obviously wise. The tablets must be taken for a period BEFORE and AFTER the trip but I don't know the durations?

Consult your doctor.

doxy is very chaep...you begin to take ot 2-3 days before your trip and then take for 3 1/2 more weeks ) usual scrip is for 28 - 30 pills)...1 pill per day...easy to do in my book...I also use DEET over my sunblock on exposed skin areas only...ex-officio sells mosquito resistant clothing, but you could spray the clothes if you felt the need (applies to very gauze-like shorts/pants only.

Don't know if it is available in Thailand or Cambodia. It is available in North America.

A little over a buck a pill/day if I remember correctly. Instructions also mention the use of it for the treatment of malaria.

If you are not in the malaria area for very long the cost really is not that great and you don't have to remember to keep taking a pill every day for a month after leaving the area.

Doxy is way cheaper but you have to take it for a longer time.
