Trip Report (Since this is mostly outside of Thailand)
May 28th
Land in BKK around 4pm after a nice 17 hour flight on Thai Airways new Non-Stop from JFK, Biz class was great with a seat that almost went flat, nice food, and plenty of movies to watch, multi and single player games, and last but not lest very pretty flight attendants.
Met LY and Jingjo at someplace on Soi 7/1 for a few drinks before heading to a new bar call Titanium on Soi 22, had a few drinks and talked for about an hour before I looked at my cell only to see 9 calls from Lao Girl, I never heard the phone do to the loud music. I couldn’t figure out how to make an international call to Laos from Thailand on my cell, so went back to the Westin to make the call from the hotel phone. She is worried I’m being a bad boy in Bangkok, I’m not!
May 29th
I wakeup and get a great buffet breakfast at the Westin before heading to the airport to get the 8am flight to Laos. After a short one hour flight I meet Lao Girl, her mother and a few Aunts. They and hired a Mini-van and driver for about $25 a day, everyone piles into the van and we head over to the border bridge to pickup her big sister and two friends from Thailand along with one of the friend’s little brother. After some food shopping and buying two strange flower things we head to the gold store where Lao Girl informs me that I should get something for her mother and father. We pick out a necklace and bracelet for her mother and a bracelet for her father. Now we have a nice two hour un-air-conned ride crammed to the van with about a dozen Laotians.
We arrive at the Hotel that they are worried may be too expensive at $15 a day and unpack before walking over to Mom & Dad’s place about 300 meters away. Oh I was informed that no Lao girls are allowed in my hotel room by the manager. Soon everyone is gathering to go to the Rocket Festival; some of these things are HUGE, well over 20 feet long! Little kids are carrying the rocket; others are playing various percussion instruments, and an offering tree of Kip bills, a bottle of Johnny Walker, and lots of Bier Lao. We reach the fair ground to rockets shooting off to the heavens and music blaring. Later as I watch two of the rockets blow up showering the field with sparks and burning embers, the rocket from my group fails to fire after three attempts to launch.
We all walk a bit down the road to a restaurant on the river and enjoy Lao food and more bier Lao mixed lots of drunken karaoke to Lao and Thai music. After a while we head back to the house and then I head to my hotel room, Leo Girl wants to play cards with some of her Thai friends. I get ready to go to bed when I hear a knock on my door, its Lao Girl sneaking over from her friend’s room to spend the night…
May 30th
We wake up about 5am, Lao Girl leaves about an hour later to get ready for the Engagement ceremony telling me to arrive at the house by 8am, the ceremony is set for 9:30am. I dress in a nice shirt, cuff links, tie and tie bar, slacks and walk over to the house for a nice Laotian breakfast. I start to get the hang of balling the sticky rice and just the right amount of food from the plate, this is tasty and sort of fun! I break out the two 1.5 liter bottles of White Zinfandel and the presents my mother and father has giving my for Lao Girl and her parents, a silver Tiffany charm bracelet with the American flag for Lao Girl and a Waterford crystal shell bowl for her parents along with a letter they had written to each. Lao Girl has on the red silk dress I had made for her in Chiang Mai, a red silk shawl I got her in Phuket, and the matching silver necklace and ear rings I gave her for valentines day, she looked stunning!
The flower things are brought out and the gold I got for the parents placed in a gold bowl, the engagement ring in a separate smaller bawl. After lot of string holding, string tying, a dead chicken, and a hard boiled egg we are done! So I was very hot and sticky after the ceremony and decided to take a quick run back to the hotel for a shower and change into some jeans and a T-shirt, Lao Girl’s Thai friends decide to head back also. I shower and change then stop by the other room to see if Thai friend #1 and Thai friend #2 want to head back to the house with me, they want to stay in the room with Air-Con for a bit so I head back solo.
When I arrive Lao Girl introduces me to a bunch of her friends that she grow up with, as she is recites there names for me a car pulls up and three Policemen come out. Lao Girl quickly ushers me to the back of the house, were I try talking to one of her uncles. After a bit I’m asked to sit with the policemen and give them my Passport. I’m now imaging that someone saw Lao Girl sneak into my room the previous night and they are going to arrest me for inappropriate relations with a Lao girl. Lao Girl is nowhere in sight and I spend the next hour or so on the sitting across from policemen while Lao Girl’s father and the village headman talk to the police pointing to me then to the hotel, I can’t understand more then 10% of what is being said. After a bit I’m asked to go back to the hotel and wait. The end result has that the police extorted a few hundred dollars from her parents on the assumption that Lao Girl was sleeping with me. We went to dinner at a different river side restaurant and after more bier Lao and Karaoke headed back to the hotel for what I thought would be a quit and solitary night. But yet again at around 11pm or so I hear a knock on my door…
May 31st
I wake with my little Lao sweetheart curled up next to me, one arm over my chest and one leg over my legs, one look at her beautiful face and realize I’m in heaven. I lay back and enjoy her warmth until she wakes, we then shower, dress and head back over to Mom and Dads for a late breakfast. At breakfast I only eat a little bit since I’m feeling a bit queasy. Before heading to Laos I started taking this Anti-malaria medication that the doc prescribed for me, one of my friends had taken the same stuff on a work trip to India and he told me that it had made half the people on the trip sick.
So after breakfast we are heading to Vientiane to shop for some gifts for my family, visit the Buddhist temple, and do some sightseeing. So once again me and over a dozen Laotians pile into the un-air conditioned van for the two hour drive. Lao Girl, her sisters, and her Thai and Lao girlfriends and having a great time looking at the wedding magazines my sister had give me for her. I on the other hand am trying not to puke as the hot crammed van bounces down the dirt and gravel road. After about 30 minutes or so the girls notice my distress and start handing my water, pills, stuff to sniff, and Lao Girl’s mother is even massaging my back. Of course none of this is helping me, and soon I feel the urgent need to get out of the van. So there I am at the side of this dirt road puking my guts out for about 15 minutes with about a dozen Lao ladies looking on in fascination.
I cleanup, get back in the Van and in about 15 minutes we reach the paved road into Vientiane when a pickup truck zooms around the corner right into the side of the van! We struggle out of the Van with only minor injuries, a few scratches, bruises, and sprains. I am quickly hustled out of the way so the Falang doesn’t attract any unwanted attention. After about 30 minutes a friend of the family arrives with a Jeep and a subset of us head into Vientiane. Lao Girl is convinced that I will never return to Laos! We stop by the park with the Arc and take a few pictures, before heading over to a steak place, when they realize that I’m not going to eat anything we switch to a Lao restaurant and everyone is happy.
Next stop is the Buddhist temple where a weird candle measuring procedure takes place along with instructions from Lao Girl to mark the twisted candle with my nail once for each year of my life. Other arcane objects are purchased, four large candles, lots of caged birds, some flower arrangements and incense. We proceed into the temple, kneel, and light the incense and large candles. Then we move to a monk that places a large string around the group of us and lights the twisted, measured, and marks candles before tying more strings around our wrists. We then go outside the temple and release the birds from there cages, before Lao Girl’s mother pays some lady to auger the melted candle wax the monk had handed her. I was a bit dizzy at this point because the temple was HOT, and I’m not that used to kneeling for long periods on hard wood floors, the sweat was literally poring off of me. Thank god that was over!
Next stop was the shopping area where Lao Girl’s mother bought this beautiful embroidered silk shawl thingy for my mom and a Lao pan pipe for my father. Lao Girl bought two pretty silver flower pins for my mother and sister. I pick up a hammered silver purse for my sister. I also got three bottles of Lao wine, one of Lao whisky, and a six pack of bier Lao all for $6. Anyway we head back to the hotel without any more events and the walk back for one more dinner at the river side restaurant before I sleep alone for the first time in Laos due to fear that the police my check on my room since this is my last night. I am sick and tired and just want to sleep!
June 1st - 6th later...

Are you now married to a dozen laotian women (amongst which are a mother-daugther combo) after all that ceremony? And is that legal there? 
But what I realy like to know is; What is up with the police story? Is it almost impossible to have a laotian girl in your room, prostitute or girlfriend??? That is the kind of information I realy like to know before I make up my mind to ever travel that way. Can you eleborate a bit on that issue?

To the best of my knowledge, it is illegal for a foreigner to have sexual relations with a Laotian citizen which explains our friend's predicament.

It's illegal for a Falang to have sexual relations with a LG out of wedlock... The police use this to extort money when they can.
After the ceremony I'm Engaged to Lao Girl. If everything goes well after her first three months in the US we will then get married here, then a few months later in Laos.

The police come. You're sent back to the hotel to 'wait'. Then you're told that the police extorted 'several hundred dollars' from the family which, presumably you had to reimburse them for.
Shall I say it, or would anyone else like to jump in at this point?
