Couldn't resist sharing this little exchange with a lovely Thai girl on a working holiday in Hong Kong.
I had been contacted by Oz last week to tell me he would be in Hong Kong for a couple of days and it would be good to meet for a quiet beer or two. Not the best week to be here though, what with WTO on and some very angry Korean peasant farmers on the warpath.
We arranged to meet in Neptune 2 but I beat him there by 15 minutes or so and there was nothing else to do but sit at the bar and have a cold one.
The first mouthful had just reached the throat area on its chilly way down, when I felt a sinuous arm stroke my neck. It was Sariga, a girl I had never met before, but who told me she was from Ronburi (?). Her English was very limited but still better than my Thai.
Sorry, Sariga, but I have to go upstairs and meet my friend. Will be back in 10 minutes. Oz and I get our act together and meet outside the entrance to Neptune. Two minutes later we are sitting at a table and at two minutes and 20 seconds, Sariga and a friend of hers had joined us.
Oz asks Sariga if she has been to Bangkok. No, I'm from Ronburi, was the reply.
I understand that, but have you ever been to Bangkok, asks Oz. I from Ronburi, says an adamant Sariga.
Giving her an A for effort, I do the right thing and buy her a drink, but ever the opportunist she also grabs a menu and wants to order a few things. But Oz and I decide to head for Fenwicks just up the road (and around the corner) and as we leave I give my business card to Sariga and she wai's.
Fenwicks was pretty quiet but when I left Oz he had a captive audience of Filipinas. Hope there's a FR in it, mate). One of the girls wants to come home with me but I say I have to be up again at 6am. I'll wake you up, says she (playfully). Oh, how? I ask. However you like was the prompt reply. It was a pretty fair offer but regretfully I declined. How long are you here for? I ask. Two more weeks, she tells me, " and I leave on December 20." I know my sums and I tell her that if today is the 13th and you leave on the 20th, that's one more week. That's what I say, she replies.... two weeks.
I know when I'm beaten.
This morning I get a text (several actually) from Sariga. And this is how they go.
I meet u? Sariga... When?, I ask
Tuesday night in Neptune?.. U mean meet in day or night time?
Sariga what to see u when u hevtime meet u?. Do you want to meet day time or night time?
Baby don no what u say... When you want to meet?
Sariga what night time?... When moon, not sun
Meet u can sleep plesae (sic)..
Baby love moon
Meet u to much plesae!
Well an hour has passed since the last text so maybe she's still grappling with the sun and the moon.
