I have to go down under next week and would appreciate a bit of advice.
I will be in Sydney for a couple of days and down towards Wollongong/Port Kembla in the middle of the week. Any suggestions in regard to hotel in either area would be great.

Sydney...CBD or where?

The map is very good.
I always try to stay close to where my work will be. Sydney traffic may be better than BKK but there is no skytrain and taxis can be thin on the ground.
If your work is CBD - stay in CBD. Anything outside (even close looking places like Potts Point - can be a b to get to).
Don't stay out near the airport - it is a wasteland - not even a 7/11 for miles.
Take a walk thru Kings Cross in the evening - you'll soon remember why you love BKK. Enjoy.

Some hotels down on the waters edge, opposite the casino are really nice, lots of restaurants and stuff.
make sure you go and have dinner at the restaurant on the corner in Kings Cross and get an outside table...whats it called 'bourbon and beefsteak' or something like that. Lots of interesting viewing from there, I even got a free show of a 'dark skinned aboriginal lady' taking a bath in the ball fountain just accross the park, but in full view of the outside tables.
Then there is the bikies, the ambulances, the firetrucks, the police, the hookers, the johns, the suppliers and every other creature on earth to ogle at while you enjoy a pleasant meal.....oh almost every other creature....'radio melbun' is not in Sydney.
As for Wollongong, try the Wollongong Pub.
Oh and if you meet a guy named 'Les' in Wollongong, ask him for his new phone number for me and email address.

Thanks for the feedback.
I have customer visits down by Wollongong/ Port Kembla and they are suppose to be making a couple of recommendations in regard to hotels. Really just staying in Sydney on the way in/out of Australia so no need to travel for meetings during my time in Sydney.

If you are budget minded, use

for (IMHO) the best site for Aus hotels. I have used them frequently and always satisfied. I tend to stay in Manly just a short ferry ride to CBD. Great beach and surf very close in case you want to catch some waves.
As others have said, try to stay near where you want to be. Taxis are really expensive and can be hard to come by at times.

IBF, I live in Sydney ( born and bred here), can hook you up for a decent deal both Sydney and Wollongong.
Where in Syd are your meetings so I can more accurately suggest good places.
BTW, Sydney airport to Wollongong is only a 1 hour drive in non peak-hour traffic. Train also good if your travelling light. Personally I would give Rodney's suggestion a miss,, Kings Cross is somewhat like single street Pattaya, but NOT NOT as friendly.

Holiday Inn at the famous Rocks Area is a favourite, lots of Bars & Restaurants right outside the Door. Short walk to the Underground.

where in Sydney will you stay? as Oz suggested The Rocks is nice area, but anything outside of it and Darling Harbour is not even worth considering. The place is a dump and by 10pm most people stay indoor (apart from fridays where they can stay as late as 11pm). Avoid King X like the plague, depressing little area, ridden with gays, lesbians, a few kathoeys, low lifers, and beggars, cheap & nasty fat prostitutes, grotty sex shops, awful and overpriced restaurants, druggies, the list is endless.
Wollongong is more amenable but it's a small town, a good hotel to stay is Novotel right on the beach; rooms have a fantastic view of the ocean. If you rent a motor I recommend driving back to Sydney by http://www.grandpacificdrive.com.au/ the most spectacular coastline scenery you ever happen to drive by. Open top sport cars are best but any car will do, exhilarating drive leading you to Royal National Park - http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/parks.nsf/ParkContent/N0030?OpenDocument&ParkKey=N0030&Type=Xo
Herein lay the problem with Australia, wonderfully unspoilt nature, disparate climate variation, rich wildlife, the reef barrier, and tropical QLD etc. I could go on forever. The fly in the ointment is the horrid & shocking mannerism of Australians, ugly populace, incomprehensible way of life and above all the sick parody of women folks. In other words, when down here just enjoy the breathtaking beauty of nature but avoid its people or anything manmade. Bring the entertainment with you (i.e. female companion and friends) and you should just be able to survive.

Some in fact most of the above makes sense,, but you will find most, if not all,of the local population quite amiable as long as your not a friggen pommie smart-ass git or similiar.
I do highly recommend bringing company as Aus women are a very unusual animal.
