I must state the the US government tried to buy the kid out of the lashings, several million dollars in military aid if I remember correctly.

As TPE pointed out - they knew what the law was, going on. If one is willfully breaking a law, then the only thing one is guilty of, is getting caught.
Once you get caught, f***'em.
Same with Singapore, same with Malaysia -- idiots if you are judging such a law to be barbaric (or what have you). As it stands, it seems to work for them - and if you are aware of said law, it's your choice to follow it, or to not visit said country.
