I'm going to Hanoi next week to re-apply for my Non B visa and was wondering if anyone can recommend a decent hotel or guesthouse in the Old Quarter. I've read a few forums, including Asia Rooms and Trip Advisor but from what I can make out many of the reviews are either written by the hotels themselves or by touts who work for tour operators, affililitated to the hotels. Scams seem to be the order of the day.
P4P in Hanoi appears to be at a premium, therefore a GF place is not a priority - I'm going straight to the embassy from the airport and will not have time for the tours to Halong Bay or Sapa, that seems to be the main source of income for many of the smaller hotels.
I'm looking for a clean place in a decent location, with no hassles or pressure to book a tour - budget up to $30.
When I'm finished at the embassy, I just want to get checked in somewhere then get out and about to soak up the city. If there's any action available, great - but it's not a priority.
Any recommendations will be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.
