I've tried the way through MUKDAHAN province (Thailand), which is not far from Udorn. We took a small boat to cross the river and hit SAVANNAKET province (Lao). You do need VISA as far as I am aware. Thai people just get a stamp valid for 30 days as far as I remember....cannot remember if a VISA on arrival was available (2 years ago).

mosquiot2002, from udon to laos is 56 to 60 kms, depending on where you leave from. you can go by bus to nong kai, there is some places right before you cross the border where you can get visa for laos. from there you can hire a car or take one of the buses on tour into laos. or better yet just book a tour with one of the agents there in udon and let them handle your visas for you. I have stayed at Ban Chaing hotel twice I personally did not like it but each his own, hotel is ok but there was no carpet on the floor when I wake up in the morning I like the feel of carpet on my feet and not a cold floor.

Mosquito & Slojo: I, too, have stayed at the Ban Chiang and did not like it. I always stay at the CharoenSri Grand Hotel which is right next door to a large 3 story shopping mall. Your girl may have a specific reason for wanting to stay at the BanChiang though. I once had a girl in Bangkok who was from a town near Udon and she told me that she catches a Sontaow (sp) near the BanChiang which takes her to her town. Maybe that is the case with your girl. I have never actually made the trip to Laos but I did have a friend who lives in Udon to drive me up to NongKhai once and I do know that there is a bridge at NongKhai that crosses the Mekong into Laos. Good Luck

You could stay at the Nong Khai Grand, its a nice hotel, will cost you US$30 for a visa, girlfriend 20 bt, you need a passport photo, then get taken over the bridge by bus, cabs at either end. Takes a little while for the paperwork, but not too bad. Flights Bkk to Udon about 3 times daily, around 1800 bt 1 way. Udon not a bad town, and agree with expat, Charoen Sri or even Charoen princess better.

As usual, TPE has the details spot on. Was in Laos in September with my TGF (and her family), second time this year I'd crossed the border into Laos at this checkpoint. The family left after spending the day with us in Vientiane; we stayed the night at the Asian Pavillion Hotel -- not a bad hotel at $20 USD, but not a five star either. They didn't hassle me about my TGF either. Laos does charge $30 USD for the VISA, Thai citizens get special passes much cheaper. In my case, I got a $30 VISA for my TGF too, as I wanted some activity in her passport, should the day come when she goes to the US Embassy for a toursit visa. The rest of her family and some friends simply took the Thai passes and we all headed across the Friendship Bridge with no hassles. On the Laos side, you can pick up one of the many taxis, vans, or songthaews that will take you on the 20 minute trip to Vientiane. I think I paid 600 baht for an airconditioned van that drove us around the whole day and took the family back to the Thai side that night. It's a lot cheaper than that if you are just heading into town. Keep in mind that if you pay in Baht while there, you will be charged a premium -- if you change some of you money into Lao money, you will be able to pay the going rate for museums, wats, etc. There are a number of agencies on the right hand (east) side of the road in Thailand just before the border check station that will do the paperwork for the Visas and will take passport photos. They all charge about the same for their services. If you have passport photos already, you can probably just fill out all the forms yourself at the crossing stations, but I was too lazy, and just threw some Baht at the problem. All in all, the border crossing is fairly painless, though I do remember the Thai guard on our return grumbling about something with my Visa -- so I played dumb and told him "mai khaow jai khup!" and he looked a bit dumbfounded when I said this. He repeated that phrases to himself, certain now that he wasn't going to get any extra money from me, and them stamped my return Visa to Thailand. - Balls

I was in Vientiane over the weekend and just got back today. Your question about the action, it is a yes and no. Depends on how you view it from your angle. While I was there, I noticed quite a few guys checking into the hotel with a TGF in hand and some alone. So maybe he is doing a visa-run and didn't want to go through the trouble of scouting around. The action scene is very laid back. Most joints there close at around 12midnight and some between 1am to 3am. It varies from club to club. There are strictly no GG Bars and etc but what you get are basically night clubs and discotheques. The decor in the night clubs reminded me of the 70s and 80s. Mostly live bands and some music spinned by the DJ. You can either sit alone or request for a suitable hostess from the mamasan. I was informed that there are 1 to 2 discotheques worth a visit. But due to a lack of time, I had to postpone for my next visit. Anyway, when I left the night club at 12am, the streets were all deserted and not a single shop was opened! Even the road side food stalls were shut! I got into the club at about 10pm and it was only a matter of 2 hours that changed the entire scene outside. Well, if you like a laid back lifestyle without much of the hustle and bustle, Vientiane is worth a visit and of course the majority of girls/women there do possess natural beauty looks. Currencies widely accepted is the Baht / US / Kip. Current exchange rate : 1 Baht = 250 Kip 1 US$ = 10,500 Kip Hotel rooms there range between US$15 to US$25 for a 3star hotel and US$50 to US$100 for a 4star hotel. For overnight girls, it can range between 200,000 Kip to 400,000 Kip depending the on the type and age of girl. Hope the above info helps.

The nightlife in Vientiene is pathetic, in the pure sense as well as the usual sense. Full of pathos, and lame. Bring your own TG or keep it zipped till Nong Khai. The best LaoPDR girls are ALREADY in Nong Khai, so why settle for the dregs in Laos where the logistics are complex?
