I will be arriving in mid October with a friend and neither of us has been to Bangkok before. Naturally we intend to go out drinking together, but we're wondering if the girls will be put off talking to 2 guys rather than a guy out on his own.

Should not be a problem. But you say "....will be put off talking to 2 guys rather than a guy out on his own" When it stays to talking alone you would definitly have no problems what so ever. I don't think that you will come all the way to Bangkok to limit your adventures to talking to a TG. So I will make some assumptions here if you don't mind. Almost anything is possible in the LOS. Not every girl will go for this one, but if she likes you and your friend and the rewards are worth it, she will go.

agreed ... often a plus, as either " She has a friend " or in fact will have plenty probably, so no doubt one that your buddy likes, and if you want to go for a meal or something, the TGs are much more comfortable with a friend along, - also, even if you buddy finds something better in his travels, no harm done, just excuse yourself, and an easy and accepted way out is to give the unwanted TG 100/200 bt for a cab, that way no loss of face an everyones happy.

There's lots in favour of having a friend along on your first trip.....hopefully one of you can remain sober enough to find your way home! Seriously, the only difficulty that can arise is when one of you finds a girl he likes and the other has company he really does not feel comfortable with. Privateeye's advice is very sound but the first time round it can be a bit difficult to follow through with as you're new to the scene. But if it's done in a friendly and polite way there should be no problems. When you get into a bar you will soon meet plenty of girls, believe me. And always remember that if you see one you really like get another girl to bring her over or ask the mamsan. If you look at various other posts on this board you will also pick up on the point that the best looking girls are not necessarily the best choice for long term company. BTW I think Byron has in mind a two guy - one girl arrangement which is not how I read your post but as he says anything is possible. Have fun!

The preceding gentlemen are of course correct (not surprising given their experience  ) about the advantages of experiencing LOS w/ a buddy.
I would only add that there are SOME advantages to going out alone and it does change the interaction you have; Girls sit down all around you (ironically, often if you are alone more girls will come to you than other tables - they see you as cute and lonely; sometimes it makes you "mysterious"and chicks dig that  ) and focus only on you; or you get into a more "intimate" conversation with a girl (maybe get some spark w/ her); and you definitely observe more - it's very different when your eyes are front and all you do is reflect on what you see, rather than turned and talking to your freind.
I'm just saying it's another experience, but I agree the first time (s?) it's better w/ a freind.

Having a wingman is definitely a huge asset, especially your first time.
The girls, if anything will be more likely to come up to you (in pairs or even quads). IMO, a group is much less socially awkward for the girls (many of them don't like struggling to make conversation); the girls can make random comments amongst themselves as you will with your mate. It also makes the environment more of a party, than just a sexual tryst for them.
The friend is also a good sanity check. He can let you know if you're getting out of control and hold you to certain fundamental principles (e.g. don't BF the first girl that sits with you!).
When you're by yourself you often have two or more girls approach you. When with a friend you can easily have three, four or five. I think three is a nice number, one for you, one for him and one in the middle as a "buffer."
As someone said, it can be a little tricky if two "friends" want to go with you guys, but only one of you likes his girl. There are so many options and permutations that you just have to make a judgement call at the time.

I think going with another buddy for the first time in bkk is actually good. LOS scene can be little intimating for first time comer if you are alone but with other friend on your back, you can support each other and really have a good time. And I agree with other fellows, when two guys sitting alone in the club, chances are group of 3 or four girls will approach you. Try grace after 2 pm and you will have group of 6 or 8 girls approaching you lol

Going to a bar here is more like dropping oneself naked into a tank of leeches. Or pick a parasite of your own choice if you don't like leeches.
1. You're outnumbered and surrounded.
2. You're on their turf.
3. They've got this down to a science.
All this 'hunting' talk makes you sound like Elmer Fudd after wabbits. Shhhh!
