I was thinking about shipping my motorcycle to Thailand. I know the local dealers dont sell any new 1000cc bikes. I have seen a few dealers around Bangkok that have larger used sportbikes though. I know that I will pay out the ass for import taxes on mine but I am unsure if Ill be able to find another bike that I will like. Anyone know of any dealers selling sportsbikes around BKK ?

Most of the big bikes in LOS are bought in as "spare parts" in pieces then reassembled to lower/avoid duty! Sometimes not very well! As for big Sports bikes the roads are not that good, your better with a sporty bike or an Adventure tourer, something with good suspension!

Please understand the import tax setup.. its variable (eg Farang pay) and IIRC can be up to 250% of the value THEY asess the bike to be... as Thailand has such highly priced bikes (due to these taxes  ) they will give it a local value..
A mate has a bike purchased for 6k GBP in Singapore a few years back... Worth a lot less now even if it is a ncie bike.. They want >8k GBP in tax to make it a Thai bike !!! Hence he rides it to Sing once every 6 months..

Check out Red Barons out Ramkhamhaeng Rd towards Minburi. Bit of a pain in the arse to get to but sizeable showroom with good aftersales service. Mostly big bikes fairly new. Sports bikes and tourers. As oz says most bought o/s in parts and reassembled.
I bought my last bike there and have a few mates who have bought a few. Can be a bit pricey.

Thanks for the info. I may just have to bite the bullet and pay the taxes. I dont know if I can stand another 6 months of not riding. It sucks to come back home and get outridden because I just havent been spending any time riding. I am sure that with this group of great minds someone can find me a loophole of some sort.

A big bore sportsbike seems like a waste in Bangkok, I guess you could do wheelies at 4 am on the toll way, but what a pain in the daytime. Better off with something small and agile or brutishly dual purpose...
On the other hand...
On my last trip up north I ran across a riders group at the summit of Doi Inthanon (the highest mountain in LOS) with an RC51, an R1, a couple of 400's and a Ducati 916. It's a pretty good ride up there, that and the ride up to Doi Suthep near Chiang Mai are the best Motorcycling roads i've seen in LOS. If you get a chance, check it out...

As long as you are taking the bike back with you, and not selling it in LOS, you can just get a transit carnet for it. I think it's called.
