okay, this is actually a half-rant, and some of you may not like it, but this is also serious I just have to get it off my chest. There I was minding my business in the lift at my office building earlier today, when a bunch of chattering young women got off at their floor and I jokingly made to shoo them out (when the doors were safely closing behind them). One of my Thai colleagues said that they were very irritating. I replied, grinning, "but some of them are really pretty though." Colleague replied: "But they're all low class." I went, "Whaaat?!" Asked for an explanation and all I got was an angry, irritated, "I don't want to explain to you. It's common sense." That really made me angry. Of course, I knew exactly what she was referring to. My 'common sense' about this came from living here for over half a year, interacting with Thais and foreigners, getting to know mixed Thai-foreign couples, etc. I wanted her to talk to me frankly but she just wanted to avoid conversation about that single "They are low class" statement. As if that spoke for itself. And this is not just about skin-tone colour. My Thai colleagues are a mixed bag, with the common thing being a university education or on the way to getting a degree. (So having a degree is an indication of being high class eh? I know 'educated' yobos in 2 other countries I've lived in, including my own, who wouldn't have been be mistaken for university graduates even if their professors took an oath in court to vouch for them.) 'Miss high class' colleague is one of the fairer-skinned ones from up north. Some of those women in the lift were even fairer-skinned, and I wouldn't have been surprised if one or two came from the same province or region as well. "Low class"? They're still human beings aren't they? Well maybe some Thais would like nothing more than to further segregate themselves into east and west, north and south, "low class" and "high class"; but too bad-they all have to live together in this bastardised society of feudalism and futurism (to borrow words from Thai-American writer S.P. Somtow). Now, I know that the class system has its roots in Thailand's feudal society and all that, and some aspects may even be justifiable; someday I'll get down to studying Thai history in depth. But if even educated people can have these attitudes, well then I'm happy to wash my hands off interacting with mainstream society here (beyond office hours) and just concentrate on P4P, collect my pay every month, and fc_k off from LOS when my contract finishes. Oh, and maybe shag one of the really pretty, "low class" girls that I've been noticing in my building, before I go. Feel free to comment and contribute - and where is Arcadius when you need him? cheers (a really angry) Jafa

I pity the fool who tries her hardest to be accepted into the Thai community, the best you will get is being tolerated besides it is very boring.

Relax Jafa, The fact is Thailand has the most rigid class structure of any country anywhere. In Britain, I think we have 9 different classes - in Thailand, they have approximately 60 million, with everyone numbered 1 to 60m from the King down. It is a weighted algorithm (unknown to all farangs but stamped in every Thai brain) of the following factors. Breeding (history and success of parents) Education (where and how successful) Wealth (absolute and salary) Job (type and position) Contacts etc.. etc... Thais love all this stuff... The good news for us farang is that we are not expected to know about this and that to a large extent we transcend all class barriers. (Basically meaning we can do a lot more, say a lot more to a lot more people than your average Thai.) So it is even possible for the same farang to be dating a lo-so isaan hooker one year and a Thai supermodel the next. (This would be inconceivable for a Thai guy.) Pick out a copy of Tatler and you will find that many hi sos, models, businesswomen have farang boyfriends. So just forget about it. As long as you are polite, respectful and well dressed you can get away with anything. ps that doesnt include dry humping hookers in their night clubs LY. pps And dont go on about the money thing Krypto, it is barely relevant - there are plenty of poor people with class and plenty of rich without (both in Thailand and in the UK). I think it is only the US that ranks people purely on wealth.

I guess as falangs we can be considered as having 'no class" at least that is what many females in many different countries have told me over the years.

The Hiso thai girls take so much f_cking energy to deal with that they are hardly worth it...but it is great fun doing A to M on snooty stuck up daughters in nasty short time hotels. (now that I think about it it, A to M on the Moms is fun too)

K, who the hell is "blubber butt!" ?

Thais love to look down on people and are fearful of those above. They categorise everyone they meet instantly based on physical appearance, manners, apparent wealth etc. They then listen to them speak. Thais are so class bound that they betray their status instantly to each other. If you take a hooker to a hotel the receptionist will spot her instantly and treat her accordingly. As a farang you are hard to classify because they have few clues to your status. If you dress well in a business suit with neatly cut hair, a new mobile phone and expensive sunglasses you will get respect which you do not deserve. If you wear shorts and T shirt you may still get respect on the basis that farang are either all rich or because they cannot classify you. If this upsets you do not let it show, it will lower you. If you have a dark skinned badly dressed waif as your GF then ask her to walk two paces back and carry the shopping. Maybe they will think she is your maid.

Abrak and JA, I'm not farang - see my signature - and neither do I come from a western country. But my own (Singers) is westernised to a large extent and probably the most egalitarian in this part of the world. JA, when you say 'no class' I hope you mean 'classless'. Females from which countries? BKK Banger, thanks for the insight. eyeswideopen, 'Dry humping thai-chinese office girls is, however, encouraged...' hmmm...have yet to try it. What's 'A to M'? AM, I'll be sure to remember your words about the Heineken girl. And no, I won't pull 'your' gal. Not even thinking about it, I promise I think asian-americans are almost like other asians from richer countries in a sense...same-same but different, physically blend in but may not fully adapt to Thailand... I think Krypto was referring to NM... ps. Krypto, no hijacking this thread

Jafa, Women telling me I have no class was an example of my weak attempt at humor. I actually have a lot of class but unfortunately it is all low! Women in Singapore especially find my sarcasm particularly uninteresting-la. When I first read the title of this thread I thought some of my college classmates were writing about our reunion.
