Quick question....
Where can I find the official economic classification of Thailand?
I mean...is it a Developing country (and what does that actually mean) or 3rd World (which to me it cannot be). And...Poverty line...below or above?
Writing a white paper on stuff I do know about but need a section on stuff I dont...ie the economic status of Thailand.

The concept of developing nation is a bit of a sham- often used for political means. Check out the definition here: http://www.wto.org/english/tratop_e/devel_e/d1who_e.htm
There aren't any 3rd world countries anymore... That's an old cold war concept. 1st world were developed NATO countries and 2nd world were the commies. 3rd world were all the pawns.
If you search for "list of developing countries" in Google you'll find what you need. Thailand is clearly in the mix- eyeballing it I can see that the cut-off is somewhere around the US$12k/yr GDP per capita mark... so Thailand has a long way to go.

About 100 of the WTO's 130 members are developing countries. The WTO deals with their needs in 3 ways:
1. WTO agreements have special provisions on DCs
2. A WTO Committe on trade and development oversees work in this area
3. The WTO Secretariat provides technical assistance for DCs.
WTO incorporated the foundations of GATT and the most striking thing is the provisoon for non-reciprocity in trade negotiations between developed and developing countries.
This is in breach of the Most Favoured Nation principle which underlies GATT but seeks to allow DCs to erect barriers to incoming trade.
For instance why allow China to remain a developing nation when it makes space shots?
If writing a paper I would give the WTO classification and explain its significance (low) but also consider the HO model (Heckscher-Ohlin) of factor endowment.
For instance Thailand is endowed with natural resources and people resources and communication links and a stable political climate but has relatively little capital or education / skilled labour.
As HO theory considers the difference in factor endowment drives international trade and wealth you can make a convincing case for your argument, whatever it might be.
Sources of good info are the Bangkok Post's annual economic review (which is often wrong) available on their web site.
Another good source is the World Bank which makes reports available on its web site.
As a last source the Economist has various indexes including the Big Mac and the Beer indexes which compare the living costs for their reporters around the world. These can be pretty enlightening as well as all the basic data in the back of each issue (GDP etc).

I do remember Thaksin saying that he has wiped out all poverty in Thailand. I think that was the same week he announced that no prostitutes were working in BKK and the country was drug free.
