Any anyone help me locate secondhand or cheap book shops in Bangkok. I am looking for books written in english, want to by 30/40 enough to last a couple of months up country.

Chatuchuk market has some books stalls, they are hard to find, but there are a lot there. I think you might be able to find them if you either go on the underground and get out at the station and walk acroos the road to where you enter the market, they are all in that area. Hard to describe, but if you dont find them that way, walk around the outside of the market and you will definitely find them, they are on the corner of 2 streets with a large food market almost opposite.

There is a stall on the corner of Sukuhumvit and Soi4 Near Nana) with a large stock of second hand novels.

There are a couple of well-stocked second-hand bookstores featuring books and paperback novels about LOS in English, near the Emporium. One is in the vicinity, roughly, across Suk from the Emporium, and another is up Suk a few hundred meters from the Emporium, around soi 28. That one serves coffee for relaxed browsing.

Caio Caio's recommendations in my experience are the easiest and best. The one oppisite the Emporium he mentions is just in the block down from the new (ish) Robin Hood pub.
there was also a lass who sold books on the corner of Soi 22 of an evening. There is some building going on around there, not sure if the site she used is one of them. When I left I gave her loads of books to sell....she offered me money for them, but I refused. The smile in return was worth it.

I always pick up some great books on Koh San Road. They will also trade with you. KS Road also has alot of second=hand BGs too.

I'd say it's not difficult to find the Chatuchak Mket booksection.
As said, find the subway station and walk towards it.
When You get there, walk directly to the section which is opposite of the entrance ( watching Your back towards the entrance.
It does not take long to find it but checking the area may take.

I don't know where you will stay up country, but if it is not too far from Udon Thani, there is a good shop in town called "K.K." where you can buy used and new books.
