Sup': I saw an advertisement once about a place in BKK where you can shot handguns. I might be able to bring my hand gun to BKK on my next trip and would like any information regarding that club. Before any "yahoo" desides to get on my case about it, I target shoot for a hobby and NOT for protection. Meaning I do not carry a gun around and pretend I am Clint Eastwood or put a chip on my shoulder. It's just a piece of metal that takes a lot of concentration to perform well with. So .. any information would be most appreciated. Oh ... it's either that or golfing!! And since none of you have seen me golf, it might be safer for the population if I shot the handgun then golf!! ha ha ha!!

ABC, Not meaning to be a yahoo but how would you get your gun into LOS, let alone on a plane? On second thought, perhaps you'd rather not say. Be careful. I'll bet CJ will have plenty of info for you.

MrJoe: Nothing illegal. I will have less problems getting my gun into BKK, then leaving the U.S. I have to check on what is required to transport a firearm on the plane from the U.S. And when I mean on the plane, I do not mean carry it on the plane. That would be completely stupid. I do not want to go to jail over a hobby!! The person I used to shoot with went to a competition in asia and took their own weapons. So, I am hoping I can get a the required permits to allow me to pack it in my suitcase or guncase. With the 911 incidents, it might be darn near impossible though!! If I can not bring my own, then I can atleast rent one from the club.

BTW, Don't know about the specific place you are talking about but there are ranges that provide weapons to you. (I am a yahoo who likes to stay proficient with with firearms, but alas NOTHING makes me a big man.)

Importing a handgun into Thailand is possible but difficult, you need a license from (1) the Thailand Ministry of Interior, (2) the US Department of State. You may also need an End USer Certificate from the Thailand Defense Ministry stating that you will not be exporting the firearms from Thailand to anywhere else. HOWEVER I believe personal imports have now been discontinued and so you'd have to go through one of the licensed dealers down in Wang Burapa "Gun Square" -- and unless you have a lot of pull, they will be reluctant as handguns are subject to an annual quote of 100 per dealer (Or license -- some dealers have more than one license.) The import tax is high and ammunition is also expensive. In Bangkok the only range to use is the Saw Raw Paw range but in Pattaya there is, or maybe was, a public range where they also rented guns for you to shoot on premises only. And they sell you the ammunition. The gun shops can only sell ammo if you have a registered firearm in that caliber. Handguns are OK up to 9mm and .38. .357 Magnums and larger (.45, .44, .40, 10mm etc.) are restricted to Police and Military. Semiauto centerfire rifles are classed as War Weapons and are a no-no. Semiauto shotguns are OK even magazine fed ones. Pistolized shotguns with short barrels are classed as handguns. You need to be a Thai citizen or a Permanent Resident and have savings in bank of 200,000 baht before you can apply for permission to buy a gun. It's a rich man's sport in Thailand.

As far as I know the range in Pattaya is still open. (There's one in Koh Samui as well.)

There are a couple of slick magazines devoted to shooting and firearms published here. You can find them at any good news-stand. ABC, if you want to just have some fun, your police and military pals can doubtless arrange to take you to the Saw Raw Paw range (It's the Capitol Security Command), and shoot some of their stuff, maybe inclusing some automatic weapons. But legally importing you own from USA either temporarily or permanently is a major paper chase and involves using up so many major political favors in order to get the requisite high level permissions, that it is only worthwhile in the context of serious business. Last time I was involved in this, we imported, under three company names, machine guns, squad automatic weapons, and rifles from Spain, South Africa, and USA for Thai Army test trials. All were consigned directly to the Thai Army and it was still a hassle to get them through Customs here. Eventually all were re-exported. And that was all 100% LEGAL. The black market of course is loaded with about anything you could want but if you are caught the penalties are fairly stiff Wealthy Thai gun collectors often have huge money tied up in their toys. I knew one newspaper publisher with 600 guns registered, he also had 150 cars and 14 wives and 17 houses. And a collection of albino fish and reptiles. And a refrigerated truck with the corpse of a giant Mekong catfish inside (no kidding.) But he did of cancer a few years ago His brothers among them have about 1000 guns. The Thai police have let it be known that they will not sanction such an accumulation of guns in one family ever again. I used to go shooting with that guy on his 400 rai in the hills behind Hua Hin, where his father's tomb overlooks the sea, facing China-ward, as is the traditional burial style of Chinese expatriates from Hainan Island. But ABC probably knows that.
