I think they buy them back for something like 90 per cent and pawn them for about 95 per cent of the value of the weight.

I wish 95%.... depends on if shes regular customer/family etc at gold shop.... many shops are also in the PAWN business giving much less $$$ baht back for gold..... unless shes exchanges it for other gold items or higher baht weight the business will always screw the customer.

I'm not sure about how much you get (sell-back/pawn) but I believe the figures are pretty much dictated by the government. There are government certified gold sellers (it's not like the 'gems' business) and they buy back or pawn for the same prices. Prices (and the quality of gold) may vary at non-certified gold shops. This is what I've been told by an American friend who's been living here for much longer than me and who 'dabbles' in gold.

"Gold dealers in Bangkok buy back at any time gold ornaments bought from them or other stores at rates just minimally lower than their retail prices.
On December 2, 1991, gold shops in Bangkok sold one Baht weight of gold for around 4650 Baht (currency), while their repurchase prices were around 4550 Baht. A typical price for the craftsmanship for a gold chain was just around 150 Baht."
I don't think things have changed much since then (except the price of gold).

Prada Gold. You can find them in any Central store or in MBK. The nicest gold pieces I have seen anywhere.

my friend pawned 3 baht of gold for 15,000, but the retail price is 24,000. but to sell would be around 22,500.

I use the Liang Seng Heng Goldsmith Co. At 303 Yawaraj Rd. in China town. Any of the shops along the road are reputable though. Any shop you buy from, Get a certificate of quality. It lists the quanity, description, the quality, weight, and cost. If they won't give you one, don't buy.
I like this shop because they give full refund, at current price, minus a bt100 handling fee, if you have the certificate. The refund is a little lower without the certificate.
