So would it be cheaper for me to get a taxi with a meter or the drivers that charge a flat rate to move from place to place in BKK.

Nazeem, generally cheaper with the meter. The taxi drivers normally over estimate when they charge you a flat rate.

Of course one can always trust the advice of BK. Let me add that it only makes sense to go without a meter if you would like to have a car standing by for any length of time or book one for a day. If you can find a good driver that you like (with a nice vehicle), it can be quite a nice option.

as soon as you step in a taxi, say the word "meter" and check to see if the meter is on. if not, you will be in trouble.

Last taxi driver who told me his meter was sleeping I simply said I didn't want to distrub the sleep and walked. Unless you negotiate for a half day or more take the meter.

just to add a point, be aware of those taxis waiting outside your hotel!! be careful with them, they usually don charge by the meter. well, i tried taking one from my hotel to the airport and a cab driver asked for a flat rate of B400. i said no and insisted on a taxi that charge by the meter. he then said no problem and indicated for another driver (i guess they work together cos they are all parked outside the hotel) "taxi meter sir" the other driver asked. i said yes and hopped on. guess what guys, on the way to the airport, i noticed the meter was clicking extremely fast, it was already B300 when we were on the high way!!! when i reached the airport, the meter showed B540!! i knew i was conned man, cos my last trip from the same hotel to the airport only costed me B320!! what can i do?? i had insisted on a taxi meter in the first place!! and that damn meter is definitly rigged!!! well, at times i still see that taxi driver when i stepped out of my hotel. but they r rather surprised, cos when they asked " taxi for u sir?" , "taxi meter", "what u like? no meter? no problem, u choose" i just smiled and said i perfer walking!!

this happened to me as well with a taxi i flagged on the road. i refused to pay the inflated prices and only paid the normal price. i went from suk soi 3 to q-bar on soi 11 for thb 60!!! i gave the driver only thb 35 with remark i would note down his taxi number and call police, he finally agreed on the lower price. only happened once to me in 3 years living in los. again refuse to pay the inflated price, note down taxi number and go to the police.

I've attempted to take taxis to various BKK destinations lately and found drivers commonly refusing the business. Ratchada and Sukhumvit are routinely refused because of "traffic jam", even when the fare originates from some distance (e.g. Silom or the Grand Palace) and even at times when the traffic is actually not too bad. Perhaps even more surprising, Ratchada to Ramintra was refused early afternoon. The reverse trip Ramintra to Ratchada was also refused by two taxis even using the tollway. My reaction - more skytrain/subway use, and if a cabbie takes a fare others are refusing he gets a reasonable tip (circa THB40) and is told why he earnt it. I've also got the impression yellow/green drivers refuse fares most, whilst the new single color taxis are best for driver attitude. But for THB35 and mileage, with today's higher LPG prices, I don't think improvements are on the way anytime soon. In fact, the new airport is likely to aggravate the problem.

Well, in the morning or afternoon, the subway between Sukhumvit and Suttisan is a few minutes and a few baht. A taxi might be 30, 40, ?? minutes! And I have not found that the color of the taxi driver impacts whether he will take my fare or not.
