I went into a Travel Agents office today to transfer some money to my Thai girlfriend to pay for her Visa application and other things.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that Western Union have a special offer because of the Tsunami. From 10th January until 10th February, they will charge only £4 for a transfer to any of the Tsunami affected countries for any amount of money. I sent £200 to my girl which would normally have cost £22, a big saving.
So, any Bros who were thinking of sending money to their girls, do it now!

Good for western union, but still loads cheaper if you do it via there web site, a friend of mine just sent £150 to his girl in bkk and it cost him about £1.50 in charges. But the exchange rate is a bit less than the banks but only a litle.

Some people are using a PayPal account to do this even cheaper. Both parties need a bank account, and not sure if it works in LOS.

Western union fee was $7
would have been an extra $2 if I wanted to leave a message
Any idea what this would have cost at normal rates ?
and how do you get the cheap rate via the website ?

having just the ONCE used the banking system and got stung with horrendous charges I checked other ways.
Cheapest I think is to open another bank account at your branch which cannot go into credit, send your TG a debit card and then transfer money into the account as and when. It costs nothing except the ATM withdrawal charge.

Paypal doesn't work is not available in Thailand. At least you can not transfer money to your local Thai bank acount.
One way is to open an American account and apply for a debit card which the TGF uses here in Thailand to withdraw the money.
Also realize that the charges abroad are maybe reduced, but are they also reduced here in Thailand. Agents of WU here usually also take a large bite out of the amount received
