what you gonna do: avoid to get wet under any circumstance, be real careful, wear your best suit. only take taximeters, try to hide in corners, behind pillars, run in different angels (like a rabbit). use cover whenever you can. maybe khaosan will be your best option. rtb

Since it is BLAZING Hot during SongKran and April in General, it's best you just put on a thin t-shirt even a tank-top, swimming trunks and put your wallet/valuabales in a ziplock baggie. Then, when the locals are soaking you, which they will, you can confide that your wallet is safe and you'll be dry soon.

Personally, I don't really like songram. IN fact, I sorta hate it. I know thats pretty harsh, but I just hate walking around soaking wet for a week. Last year I travelled way north all the way to Pai, north of Chang Mai to avoid it. My advice if you don't wanna get wet, is to not go outside. Deff. bring lots of large plastic bags for everything you want to keep dry. Nothing is out of bounds and people will soak you even with luggage and a laptop in your hands. I know its crazy, considering I have little problem getting a bbbj, but the water sorta grosses me out. You know they are not soaking you with filtered Evian. I was in Chang Mai for the first day last year, and folks were just getting the water out of the river. You need to either resign yourself to getting wet and try and enjoy it, or stay inside for a few days, or get yourself somewhere else. From what I hear the drunk falangs in Pattaya are the worst during this period. Bah Humbug! JB

Not really a FR item this, but what the heck. When I worked in Northern Thailand 20 years ago, Songkran was a buzz - a day of total water mayhem, with some very limited water play on the preceding afternoon and perhaps the following morning. Water fights then were rarely practiced in Bangkok as I recall, and almost unheard of in the south - "we don't do that here - that's a northern custom". But driven mainly by tourism, Songkram has spread all over Thailand, and in many places goes on for days and days - Pattaya and Chiangmai in particular. What used to be a unique festival and a great leveller (where else can you hurl buckets of water at cops who just grin and bear it?) has now become an absolute pain in my view. One or two days - great, but the best part of a week going to air conditioned bars soaking wet and shivering? Screw it. I avoid Thailand like the plague during Songkran. I like a bar of cholcolate occasionally - but eating five or six bars one after another takes away any enjoyment. So it is with Songkran.

For all of the above reasons, I specifically scheduled myself to not be in Thailand during Songkran.

cheapcharlie, Definately avoid Pattaya, they have declared it a week long water festivial. Bangkok is not to bad from what I hear, with most of the water stopping at 6PM. In Pattaya it's a 7/24 event. Been to Puket a couple of times for Bike Week during Songkran and normally they only throw water on the 13th which is the Thai new year and they stop at sundown and that't it 1 day of water. If you want to see some nice bikes and party a lot I would suggest Puket. 1 day of water and some beautiful bikes from all over Thailand. Otherwise just plan on getting wet, but avoid Pattaya. They are trying to limit the water sports weapons. As mentioned before avoid Chaing Mai if you don't like the dirty water as they put it out of the canals. I caught a bad eye infection one year while I was there on a bike trip.
