Just wondering what happens if a person over-stays a visa by a few weeks, not necessarily only in Thailand, lets say Canada or the US also.
- does it make it harder to get a visa next time?
- Will you have a problem applying for a visa for different countries?
- Is there anything stamped into a passport stating you over stayed your welcome?

How do we know about the US or Canada? This board is about Thailand. A - No B - No idea C - Yes, a big stamp and the amount of the contribution you've made. I have almost 12 big stamps already. Wonder when I get a bonus (free drink or so).

Overstayed my visa a few days last year, and discovered the problem on my way to Vientiane. They were very polite about it, I paid the 200 Baht fine, got the stamp and signature scribbles in my passport, and I was on my way, no problems. It was my mistake (was reading the entry, not the exit date stamp, maybe too much Viagra and not enough sleep) and I was polite in admitting it. Never had a problem in the following 5 months of x-border hi-jinks, as the "audit trail" had been properly signed off. I wouldn't make a career of it, the occassional screwup shouldn't get you deported. Being polite helps. After all, I am a guest in their country and I would like to be able to return. - Balls

But here come the trick! DO NOT I repeat do not get cought on your way to the airport or in the bar some were or if the police take you when doing a raid in some go go bar. Then you are in BIG problem and have to stay in prison untill the court kicks you out of the country. A fine of 4000 THB is the usual kick back and take my advice and pay you do not want to end up in the immigration cell with the rest of the 200 Africans for 3 days waiting for court.

On a related issue, does anyone have experience of failure to notify the Authorities of your address? I have a friend who, due to marital problems, is having to leave LoS sharpish, and he hasn't notified his address EVER. He has a WP so wasn't doing visa runs and should have notified his address every 90 days. Has anyone been hit with a fine for this? What is the maximum? This is urgent, he's due to leave on Saturday. Thanx

ccvvbb, For the United States here are the answers: 1. Yes, very much harder. 2. Probably not as there is nothing to indicate the overstay. 3. No, nothing is stamped.

Being a good boy, I do this every 90 days. I forgot on Monday and went in on Tuesday. The piece of paper in my passport said if I was late it was a 5,000 baht fine plus 200 baht per day. This is more than it used to be (2,000 baht?) and I was told that there was no longer a week's grace period (if there ever was...officially). I was too busy being nice and smiley and subserviant to catch if the woman said she was letting me off because I was 'sweet', 'sweaty' or she was applying the unofficial 'week's' grace period. She may have said something about Songkran? Whatever, I didn't pay a fine. I have at least one friend who's been here 7 years, has never notified them of his address, and he goes to Laos once a year and no one's ever said anything to him, so who knows? Have you looked on Thaivisa.com?

When I had a WP, it was not necessary to notify every 90 days as my whereabouts were know....
