im about to leave the uk for los and have recieved an email from a work colleague saying I need a visa to visit los even though I have a return ticket for 3 weeks later.
please tell me he is being a jealous príck and winding me up?

I just did a "in/out visa" at the Nong Khai border crossing 2 days ago. Your friend is somewhat misinformed.
There are at least two types of visas:
The "Visa on arrival" is what you will get when you land, and it is simply a big stamp in your passport, with your entry and exit days. It's good for 15 days. It costs $30 USD (or 1500 Baht) and is hassle free. You should bring a passport photo of yourself, as they need this to fill out the forms. I know of people who have gotten this Laos visa at the Nong Khai crossing by also using bad photo-copies of their pix from their passports, lol!
The other visa, which is a true Tourist Visa, is good for 30 days (not sure if it is available for more than that), costs the same (last time I did it, a year ago), and is prettier to look at. You can extend the Visa on Arrival while incountry.
So don't worry about it, just pack a photo or two, and get on the plane, kick back, enjoy the inflight drinks, and enjoy Laos.

Damn, need to get my glasses adjusted, lol! Guess I have Laos on the brain after my weekend excursion. Either that or going blind from too much Viagra! Good thing I didn't do Disneyland this weekend, or we'd have prsit on the way to the Magic Kingdom right now! At least he'll have a pleasant surprise at Don Muang when they grant him the full 30 days, lol!

Bros,
Note that Lao borders to/from Vientiane (by air or road) are closing down between 20 (today!) and 30 July 2005, bcse of the ASEAN meeting. You can fly up to Luang Prabang directly from BKK only, not through Vientiane airport. Why would anyone want to go to Laos anyway?
