Little Big Man
Just as I think I have digested most of the comments from members about on-line banking scams, and enjoyed them, at the BKK airport yesterday, for the third time in two years I had the usual B1,000 / B500 trick pulled on me. I was on my way to cambodia, was early so decided to get something to eat. I stopped at a pub/restaraurant at the airportand had lunch and a beer. Bill was B420, and I gave them B1000, and received B60 back as change. No mistake, I gave the waitress a B1000 bill, as I had 5 in my wallet from an earlier trip to an ATM and now had only 4. Gave her the B60 back and told her to tell the cashier to try again, as I gave her B1,000. Heard nothing for several minutes so I went up to the cashier and asked for my correct change. She smuggly and with a scowl as well, waved a B500 bill at me and said this is what I gave her. I said that is not correct and I wanted my correct change. She said no, that I got it at B60. I went back to my table and fumed for a few minutes and got madder and madder. Finally after about 5 more minutes and nothing, I took another B1,000 bill out of my pocket, stood up, held it up, and loudly announced that everyone should watch their money in this restaurant. I didn't say that as well as I should have because everybody immediately stopped eating and frantically went to their wallets and purses to check their money. The manager came over quickly and told me to leave or he was going to call the police. I said OK, call them I will wait. I waited about 10 more minutes for the police but none showed up. So, still fuming, I went to the outside part of the restaurant where about 50 people were eating and loudly told them the same thing, except being more precise and telling them that I paid B1000 and received change for B500. Manager came over again and this time said to get out of his restaurant. I said I would when I received my correct change. Then went back and sat at the table again. Getting close to my flight time but I was still madder than hell and was not going to let this go. About 2 or 3 minutes later the waitress brought over my correct change of B560. I got up and left.

Some of you may disagree with what I did and that's fine, I understand. But this is a common scam and I simply was not going to have it pulled on me again without a fight.

Nah...I'd say well done and good luck to you.

I'd be likely to do the same as you LBM but in my version about halfway through the second announcement, now outside as I point accusingly at the offending restaurant, I'd notice I am waving my departure tax receipt and realise that I only had 4.5k left when I sat down....Enjoy

You should make it clear to the waitress when paying with 1000 baht that it is what you are giving her just tell her "1000". A lot of people do this especially in the bars.

The decent waitresses will tell you that it is a 1000 baht before they take it to the cashier.

I have seen and heard this many times but am not sure what it is good for, as the waitress may still cheat on you and bring back only the reduced change thereby denying you ever gave her 1000 Baht.
What she says on receipt of the money does not necessarily have an effect on the amount of change she will bring back (unless there are witnesses around).
Like: "What did I say? 1000 Baht? No I never say 1000 Baht!! And you never gave me 1000 Baht."

I am not so sure mine was a scam more a genuine mistake.
I was in 7/11 at Chiang mai, bought a bottle of water gave her 100 baht, no change!

"You give me 20"
"No, I give you 100"
She told supervisor so closed the till counted the money against the till and I got my 80 back.
I know it may not be worth wasting too much time for 80 baht but I felt I had to stand my ground because I was 100% right.

Well it must work because I have used this method for years in LOS and never been ripped off anywhere with the 1000 change scam...maybe just lucky.

I think it shows the waitress you know the deal here so don't F*** with me. Also unlikely she will still cheat on you after this because of loss of face and she would be scared of the scene that will develop.

Dekka,
I told the waitress it was B1,000 when I put the B1,000 in the plate but as you can see it did not good. That said I am guessing it is because the cashier and manager are in on the scam only. Don't remember the name of the restaurant, but the word "pub"was in the name. The only restaurant with pub in the name. Not a dingy bar at all where this probably happens most of the time.

I would like to see members go into this restaurant and tell the manager that word is out he is running a scam. Maybe this will help others, maybe not.

I agree with Gus. Even if you have received the wrong change honestly, stand your ground, and let them know they are wrong. Probably B80 would not have raised my ire as fast as B500 did, but I still want what is mine.

Oh and by the way, I just barely made my plane but thinking back I was just ready to leave anyway, BUT I was going to make it clear to the manager that I was coming back thru in 3 days and would take it up with him again and the airport police.

I always pull up the 1000 baht note and snap it in front of the girls so she knows.

Only once had a problem and that was in a go-go where they gave my change to another mate and his change to me

I was down on that one but we sorted it out.
