A few years back someone I know who lives in Thailand kept making the comment that this farang is a loser and that farang is a loser. I just put it down to him being pompous.
Over the years I have met or heard about a number of farangs who are running from the taxman, credit card companies, alimony, police or more importantly themselves. I've seen many pour booze down their throats as if prohibition is just around the corner.
Even on this forum I have read comments about the general poor quality of Farang in LOS.
I have begun to wonder whether the comments from 'Mr Pomposity' have any validity ?
This is a serious question and is not meant to cause offence in any way.

Whilst every place in the world has it share of losers, I have to agree with Brother Wolf in that 'non-First World' countries tend to attract more than their share of losers. This is because the sins of their former lives are not recognized there and the fact that they are farang gives them a degree of status that they do not have at home.
On the other hand the same countries attract more pioneers and adventurous entrepreneurs who are seeking new opportunities not constrained by the economic/social structures and hierarchies back home.
In the end it pretty much balances out...

tend to agree with Wolf... and also the fact that thailand is a place where a person can lose himself... and pick up some bad habits.... and a lot of the sex tourists just cant get laid in their own country so they come here.... lots of reasons but all in all a crowd that is outcast... many cant get along in their own country, yet they find solice here..... social and economic refugees.....

Too many of them bring their bad habits with them.
There's no doubt many have failed at everything in falangland (marriage, career, finances, sobriety etc etc) and this is the last stop. Until they are thrown out.
OTOH, I have met acomplished professionals who simply want to have a good time without getting pissed out of their minds and without any BS and nonsensical rules.

I think it is a very interesting question. For sure, I think LOS is a sanctuary for misfits and has a high percentage of underachievers and general losers as defined by the coutries they came from. That being said, there are many exceptions to the rule and of course, there are always those that are in denial for whatever reason. I think it is interesting that TGs think the farangs that visit, are a typical cross section of that countries general population but I just don't think its true. Just my opinion so please don't take offense.

That is an interesting point, probably true. And one reason many expats get our noses in a ruffle about some of the behavior we see among certain tourists/expat maniacs, not wanting those sweet innocent lovable bargirls (or any girls) to think all us foreigners are like THAT. However no one's perfect. But I agree with China Sailor and Yodsaker in that this place necessarily attracts the extremes, and so hopefully it balances out.

What is the definition of a loser ?, any Falang down on his luck, on his last baht is a loser in thailand.
Thats certainly not all but some.

I have sat in a chiang Rai hospital observing their so called Knowledge.
