Thailand in Olympics-era hockey record Changchun, China (BangkokPost.com, Agencies) Kazakhstan beat Thailand 52-1 to wrap up their ruthless march through the group stage of the Asian Games ice hockey tournament yesterday. A search of records indicated the game was the highest scoring match in Olympics history. Kazakhstan is currently ranked 11th in the world in the sport. Thailand is unranked. Other tops teams have taken it easy against the amateurs from warmer countries but the pre-tournament favourites scored 17 goals in the first period, 20 in the second and eased up only slightly to score 15 in the last third of the game. The scoring was spread fairly evenly through the roster and Oleg Yeremeyev took the biggest haul with seven goals inside the first two periods as Kazakhstan added this rout to a 38-0 drubbing of the UAE. Pongsak Phiewklam and Jason Cotsmire, who shared goaltending duties for the Thais, also stopped 39 shots between them and Thailand at least prevented the shutout when Arthit Thamwongsin hit the target after 47.15. Kazahstani goalie Sergey Ogureshnikov ended up with a poor saves percentage - just four of five shots by the Thais. Kazakhstan go through to the next round as comfortable winners of group B having scored 90 goals to just the one against. The highest score in an NHL game was when the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Quebec Bulldogs 16-3 in 1920. In the 1924 Winter Olympics at Chamonix, France, Canada defeated Czechoslovakia 30-0, Sweden by 22-0, Switzerland 33-0 and Great Britain 19-2. At the Winter Olympic Games in St Moritz, Switzerland in 1928, Canada earned a gold medal in hockey when the University of Toronto Varsity Grads romped to victory, winning all three games by scores of 11-0, 14-0, and 13-0.

That's nothing. Wait till you see China stuff America in the medal count 2008. Sure 58-1 is bad, but the Thai guy who scored Thailand's lone goal, he is the real hero! And with a save percentage of only 80% the Kazak goalie sucks.

says the Thai hockey coach: ""For our players, they still have to think about how to skate on the rink first," said Michanel Rolanti, head coach of Thailand."But for the Kazakhs, skating is natural, catching and passing the punk are natural. The only thing they think about is how to score a goal." Rolanti, who arrived Bangkok two months ago from Boston, the United States, which is staging the only professional ice hockey league NHL in the world, didn't even dare to imagine that there isice hockey in the tropical country. "Thailand is really hot and wet, which is not good for ice hockey," he said. "There are 40 adult players throughout the whole country. However, it is already beyond my imagination." "You can skate and play here outside, and we have to do this in a rink," Rolanti said at the rink of Changchun, Northeast China. Thailand has only one rink, but it is already two thirds more than that in Hong Kong, China.

the icerink at samrong imperial is quite nice and heavily air conditioned. TOXIC had a bar their at the International Ice Hockey Tournament in october and barhandy needed several pullovers and lots of alcohol to keep her warm. I have seen the Thai National Team playing, they are not that bad. but the Flying Farangs are much better. rtb
