"I've seen so many old farangs with young Thai women," said Nattaya Rattanamanee, 31, an accountant working at a hotel on the resort island of Samui, using the Thai word for Westerners. "These old farangs damage the reputation of Thailand; they turn Thailand into a land of prostitutes."
She would rather see them with an old Thai....... perhaps as mia noi or mia gep or just, you know, in an out of sight brothel (if it's the ladyboys in the photo, so would I).
But actually marrying these poor women and bringing them into your rich new house... Good heavens! No wonder Miss Nattaya is so uptight. She'll probably never have such a house. An accountant at a hotel in Samui. Ironic.
And as for "turning Thailand into a land of prostitutes"... What was it before? Read the history books.
Nationalism is generally treatable as a sickness of the mind.
Thai people I meet everyday still seem nice and lovable to me.
NB, It took me a couple edits on this post to try to get at my real feelings on such an idiotic article.

Under proposed new rules for foreign investors, companies such as Federal Express might have to give up control of their operations in Thailand. Car and electronics manufacturers could be barred from delivering their cars or disk drives to ports for export; only Thai-owned companies would be allowed to transport items within the country.
Retail chains — big ones like Carrefour and hundreds of smaller ones — could be frozen out of future expansion. Land purchases by thousands of foreigners could be declared illegal.
...to some Thais, including Vongthip of Bangkok Bank, the law would also help redress what is seen here as the injustices that accompanied the financial crisis of the late 1990s, when indebted Thai companies were forced to sell their assets cheaply to foreigners. Foreign banks and companies, Vongthip said, "picked up everything for a song."

Anyone who lives here day in and day out knows all too well that smugness and ignorance are perhaps the two most salient features of what is jokingly known as Thai culture. Both those local characteristics, not surprisingly, appear in full flower in the IHT piece.

Lets face it bros: what we do is not exactly honorable... We do it because we feel that it doesn't really harm anyone and because we gave up trying to make the world a better place... at least that's it for me...
I was always surprised and am still about the vast tolerance against punters in Thailand. Somewhere deep in my mind I'm waiting for the strike back from the male Thai population... Well it's a complex thing somehow...
