... okaaay?... 'paper', as in toilet paper?... in the 'pan', as in the toilet bowl?... are you trashing on the state of the art of Thailand's 3rd world public sanitation systems, are you? ... help us out here Hermanolobo... not that this has the markings for a particularly intellectually stimulating thread... but, hey, let's see where it goes.

It wasn't me guv'nor. It was a mate who had the 'Don't put paper down the loo' experience. The point being, a new International airport with a Third World sanitary system. There must have been a fiddle going on with the construction. As in the holes that appeared on the taxiways etc.

... I believe everything anyone wants to know about Thai business culture (and much more) is all nicely wrapped-up in the story of this airport's creation... it is a seminal case study on Thailand. ... several acquaintances shared 1st person stories that really opened my eyes to the breadth of incompetence and depth of corruption that is Thailand... the stories are many. ... a harbinger of things to come, the original airport designer, the famous architect Helmut Jahn, took his name off of the project when he saw what the Thais were up to. ... a transportation consultant I know, engaged by the Indian government in planning the PROCESS of planning new Indian airports uses Suvarnabhumi as his case study on how NOT to do it... he cites as evidence that the world's best international airports are the ones opened in Asia over the last decade, or so... Singapore, KL, HK, Seoul... the screaming exception is Suvarnabhumi, which struggles to distance itself from it's notorious history and opening reputation. ... won't belabor the point here, but those stories continue. ... I sat on the BOD of a Thai company with the former Chairman of the New Bangkok International Airport (NBIA), the government agency created to develop Suvanarnabhumi... he is a retired general, with absolutely no idea of what he was doing, and a thoroughly corrupted bureaucratic thug... sitting in thr same room with this soulless, decrepit old dinosaur would leave no one surprised that Suvarnabhumi's toilets cannot handle toilet paper. ... and yes, from all of this, even the toilets have a story... many entire toilet facilities were removed from the original design, ostensibly for 'value engineering', which I now understand in Thailand as 'reallocating money into the corruption accounts'. ... customer and international travel industry complaints, news stories and the high levels of controvery this airport attracts internationally finally forced the government to re-install them in the year or so after the airport opened. ... "do not flush paper" apparently remains the first design specification Thai sanitation engineers are taught... it's just needless in this day and age... but, it also says volumes about Thailand's position on the world's toilet queue.

... you are so right about that... but, I believe heads more sober than the Thais will prevail. ... as Israelis view Iranian nuclear weapons as a clear threat to their existence, it seems quite reasonable that countries near Thailand will view a Thai-operated nuclear plant as a threat to their existence, and will bomb it into oblivion before it can go online. ... hey, if is brought online, it is going to happen anyway, right?... and how could any UN Security Council condemn that?... the debate could sound something as this: UN Ambassador to [insert any country here]: "Mr. Secretary, it needed to be blowed up." UN Secretary General: "Ah-hah... well, okay then... explanation accepted... next order of business." ... hard to believe the civilized world would actually stand-by and allow the Thais to do this.

At a few billion US to build a nuke plant, yes the powers that be will let the Thais build a nuke plant, but putting it online, and supply the fuel to run it........no way. It's like selling the Thais old submarines, they can buy all they want, but to think they have any security, or strategic value over neighboring countries if foolish. Any highschool kid with a shortwave radio receiver can pinpoint their location, as there is absolutely no way they could maintain radio silence for more than a few hours. Think of the number of generals that would go down with the ship when the first leaks start. All high ranking Navy generals will want to be on the submarines. That is status for them.

The airport has more bomb scanners than an other airport in the world, including Israel, yet a military grade C-4 explosive made its way into Thailand. When the scanners were being bought there was an intermediary company set up to handle the deal. This company was found to just be a front to syphon 10% of the cost off for corrupt diversion. The company was removed from the process, yet the final cost of the scanners did not go down by the 10% this company was making in graft, even though it was no longer in anyway involved, and did not receive any money. There was one full level of corruption removed but the price did not change....lololol.
