Black is dedicated to Art Blakey, the great hard bob drummer and band leader (the Jazz Messengers), and a friend of the owner's father. The dedication tells you something about the style of jazz music you can expect hear at this new club on Soi 33 (next to Basilico, second floor). Hard driving, straight ahead jazz (Miles Davis, Monk, Coltrane, etc.). But the owner, who plays the trumpet and sings, was mixing it up with some slower ballads and jumpy tunes mixed in ("Putting on the Ritz"), as well as a blues number by Ray Charles. It was all of the very highest quality, and the acoustics in the small space were excellent. No cover and reasonable drink prices, what more could you ask for? The band is currently playing from 8 to midnight, but they may push it an hour. I haven't heard such excellent live jazz music in a very long time (probably not since the Zinc Bar down on Houston Street, NYC). The rest of the band varies based on who's available, but apparently there is a vast pool of talented musicians in Bangkok who are tired of just playing backup to the female lounge singers in hotel bars. I can't wait to hear some more. (But bring your own companion, as there is none to rent there. Of course, the Soi 33 bars that have not yet closed (Christie's is also gone now it seems) are just downstairs, including the new Lips which had a very high talent level when I stopped in last night, including coyotes... So not exactly your father's Soi 33 bar).
