The Russians are coming
Tourist roubles - not military might - mark growing influence on the region
=============================================

Two decades after the end of the Soviet Union's military influence in Indochina, Russia has emerged as a country with growing potential for Thailand and its neighbours to reap the benefits of its rising spending power.

Tourism has long since replaced military jostling for geo-political position as Russia's biggest infleunce on Southeast Asia.

Thailand saw 1.3 million Russian tourist arrivals in 2012, a 25% increase from the previous year, the Tourism Department reports. More Russians came to Thailand than tourists from any other European country.

About 175,000 Russian tourists visited Vietnam last year, a 170% leap from 2011, according to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.

In Laos, Russian tourist arrivals jumped more than 30% from 2010 to over 7,000 in 2011, the Information, Culture and Tourism Ministry says.

A landmark of Russian influence in the region was Cam Ranh, about 200 kilometres northeast of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, once a base for Soviet Union navy ships to berth.

Cam Ranh airport, built by the US during the Vietnam War was turned over to the Soviet and then Russian airforce from 1979 to 2002.

The upgraded and refurbished Cam Ranh International Airport began operating in 2009 and Vietnam hopes that Russians will soon come back - this time as tourists rather than military officers.

Vietnam Airlines will launch a weekly direct flight to Moscow out of Cam Ranh starting April 5, airport director Luong Van Thanh, told the Vietnam Investment Review.

The new route has been introduced to attract more Russian tourists to Vietnam, especially its coastal areas, as the country projects 350,000 Russians to visit annually by 2020.

Laos launched a campaign in Russia in March by attending the four-day Intourmarket International Travel Fair in Moscow for the first time.

The goal was to promote Lao tourism and encourage more Russians to visit the country, the Vientiane Times reported.

Thailand has also targetted more tourists from Russia, as well as China and India, to the country. They could be a force to drive the kingdom's tourist industry to reach the 24.5 million target this year and the 30 million mark in 2015.

"Tourists [arrivals] from Russia, India and China are leaping forward and it is a long-term trend," Krailuck Asawachatroj, chief financial officer of the Erawan Group hotel chain, said last week.

"Economic growth in their countries gave them purchasing power and money to spend and now they have started to travel overseas."

The Thai Foreign Ministry said the tourist visa exemption for Russians was a factor enticing them to come to Thailand.

But Mr Kriluck said that Thailand is also a destination with the best value for money.

Vietnam and Laos also have visa exemptions for Russian visitors.

I might be sensitive but abusive Russians everywhere are to me a problem.
The staff downstairs at the hotel were stressed after getting abused for running out of coffee in the  morning breakfast buffet.
A maid was getting sworn at for not providing two toilet rolls.
They played loud music by the pool and spat on the ground often.
On walking street they were threatening in their manner to some older American tourists.
In the bars they took up seats and yelled and kicked chairs.
If you bump into one accidentally they want to fight you.
They dominate baht buses (again abusively)
On the beach their woman do provide eye candy.
But the negatives outweigh that.
Each to their own but sorry aside from wearing amusing clothes and stooge haircuts these guys are arseholes.
Not to mention crooks whose mafias are also increasingly active there.

First time I visit Thailand in 1996. Being Russian, I can see the difference now in 18 years.
Certain types of behavior from my countrymen abroad make us Russians ashamed.
This topic has being actively discussed in multiple Russian travel forums devoted to Thailand.
Comments from Russians who for many years used to resort to Thailand as to a place for R&R and much more, once in awhile or on more permanent basis, blame those who ignores the local culture and rules, moreover ignores the rules in polite community.
It does not matter, highly educated or farm workers.
Experience from penpals : When asked where r U from, honest reply with regret, or even some say another country but Russia.

Your obviously more refined and polite.
I apologise to you directly for the comments that might have offended.

For what it's worth I defended Russian tourists being scammed by a. Jet ski operator when police arrived..
I had a HD digital camera and said my footage could expose the scam.
The cops took the bluff.

The Russians made me take a 1000 baht.

It's not all Russians just some very uncultured ones that break the unwritten laws of holiday protocol

Russian tourists' safety assured
========================

MOSCOW - Thailand has assured Russia about the safety of its tourists, whose numbers have been rising rapidly.

The issue was raised is a meeting of the Thai-Russian Joint Commission, during the three-day visit to Russia by Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul, which ended on Friday.

Mr Surapong told Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that Russian tourists would be assured of safety during their visits to Thailand.

About 1.3 million Russian tourists visited Thailand last year, a 25% jump from the previous year, according to the Tourism Department. More Russians came to Thailand than tourists from any other European country.

The two countries also held talks on possible cooperation on energy and agriculture.

The minister said Thailand would invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit the country later this year.

It will be interesting when the Thai Mafia and the Russian mafia go to war. Which at some stage is inevitable.

I have met some nice ones and tried to avoid the Russkie Mafia, who make the Italian Mafia look like a vicar's tea party.

In the main the Russians are tough and frequently drunk.

One in the Bolshoi Ballet has just thrown acid in the face of the artistic director. The trial continues.

The Russian Mafia are also the most intelligent. Most of them have PhDs and while the Italian counterpart are playing ball, these guys play chess.

Everybody seems to have forgotten their espionage activities.

They are still very active in this area, especially the GRU.

About which, the Thais appear to be naive.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.
