This has probably been discussed quite a few times before but I have only just got around to reading 'The Beach' by Alex Garland. I have seen the film but I wondered what other people thought of the book.

Well, the book is set in the loosest way on Thailand, but I don't know how related it is. He makes a statement about how this isolated beach area could only be in Thailand and not in places like the Phillipines. But this statementi s never justified; and I didn't really feel it rang true.
In other words... I only felt like Thailand was used as a backdrop setting and wasn't really related to most of the book, unfortunately.

I liked the book a lot, but I was somehow disappointed by the movie even if it had some fantastic scenes and the soundtrack was good.
And yes, I travelled in the tracks of Leonardo di Caprio at Phe Phe Islands where one scene was shot. Luckily I was not attacked by a shark...

yeah mostly great stuff especially the book IMO 
that french chic was ok too
khasan rd is not even close to patpong, but it's backpacker central in old city banglampoo not far off grand palace or china town for that matter!
it appears some guys never venture further afield than suk rd

Liked the book very much until the last .... i dunno.... maybe last 5 pages or 15 pages. It shows he didn't know how to make a smooth well worked ending and it is a rushed one that comes a bit out of nowhere.

Thanks, found it! Kao San Rd. I right off the National Monument but a bit afar from China Town.....Shite, i must have "schmeeled" the WackPackers on my vistis out that way. maby I'll camp out at the Marriott Resort this visit, great place and they've a nice shuttle boat to the BTS station on Siam Line....I heard the falang BP girls
are undercutting the BG's for ST's and smoke only!
Seems those dreatful rooms allow joiners! Yuck!

As for the film I thought it was crap....and the book as someone else said was good reading until the end...it was almost as though the guy realised he had to finish it soon and still hadn't had the idea......thouroughly disappointing. Definately not a book about Thailand.
