On a request from a fellow member I post some information I have about visiting inmates in Bangkok’s most notorious prison. Have visited this place in October 2001. The reason I visited was a thread on Lonely Planets Thorn Tree where this subject had come up. So I was intrigued and did some research on the net. Found out that there was/is a fellow Dutchman over there so that's when I decided to visit. Also being stranded in BKK for a week had something to do with it as well. After all now I had the time I needed. Actually it surprises me that no one from the residents can answer this question. In fact it is very simple to visit inmates and you do NOT have to bribe any guards or so. When you visit this website http://www.phaseloop.com/foreignprisoners/ you will find most if not all of the information needed. From Sukhumvit road take the sky train all the way to the river (remember to switch trains at Siam Station) and at the river take the boat all the way to Nonthaburi (end of the line). This takes about an hour travel time, relax and enjoy the view from the river. When you get of the boat follow the main road for another 500 meters (do not know this exactly anymore so bear with me) till you reach the first road to your left. Take this left-hand road for another 500 meters (or less) and the visitor’s centre is on your left, while the main building is on the right. First go to the website to figure out in which building the person you want to visit is. There are 10 buildings on the prison complex, each about the size of a soccer field. A total of 9000 inmates live in this complex. In the middle of each field is the housing block. You do not get to see all of this; it's just background information. All 900 (yes you read that right) inmates live in a two-story building with no more living room than 1 square meter, that is in a room of 6 by 4 meters and 24 inmates in a room. All the rooms are barred top to bottom, so any privacy is absent. On some cells the inmates have weaved blankets or plastic sheets between the bars, but that's basically it. Anyway I am deviating from the post so I continue where I left. It is important to find out if the inmate you intend to visit is listed on the website. Only 112 inmates in the prison are listed on the website. That's because YOU have to inform the owner of the site if there is an omission. Information can also be obtained from the local embassy from the country of origin of the inmate. So if he is not on the website, ask them. When you have found out in which cellblock he is you know when you can visit. This is an excerpt (did I spell that right?) from the website "Times: Building #1-3, Mon, Wed; Building #4-6, Tues, Thurs. Register by 9am for the 9:30-11:30am slot and by 1:00pm for the 1:30-2:30pm." This also means that building # 7 till 10 are off limits. I know that building 10 is a 'hard time' building, for inmates who did not behave or something like that. Visit in the morning because then you have 2 hours time, as in the afternoon you only have 1 hour. And the afternoon is busier too. If you want to bring some goods to the prison keep in mind that you can buy most if not all (that's allowed anyway) in the shop inside the prison. It keeps you from carrying a big bag (considering that when you buy something you buy a lot) to the prison, and it does not have to be searched before entry. You have to give any bags, rucksacks or such to the guards and get a token in return. Supplies for your inmate, which are allowed, can be brought in. When you enter the visitor’s area inside the prison you see a rectangular area. The right hand side is for Thai inmates, the left hand side for foreigners. At the end of the right hand side there is a booth (don't know how exactly to describe it, you know it when you see it) where you can deposit the goods you brought for your inmate. It will be given to him after the visit. So memorize your shopping list and tell him what you brought. This brings me to what's NOT allowed inside, obviously drugs, leave that to the guards (yes the guards deal inside the prison). Also books and cigarettes are not allowed. Although books can be send by mail or by the embassy worker who visits your inmate. Cigarettes can be bought in the prison shop. Right now I am drained of information, if I have left out anything you want to know, or if you have any comment at all, just post on this thread or PM me. MickyK

The majority of foreigners held inprisons are held by the local police, in the area that they were apprehended, dealing with local police is somewhat different, but by and large you can get into see prisoners at anytime, take a few packs of cigarettes for the people on both sides of the bars, items like soap/small pillow/towel are all handy, as none of them are provided -

Actually by law, there is a limit to how long anyone can be held by local police. After a certain period they are moved to a prison. In actual fact there a dozens of foreigners in either Lard yao or Bang Kwan prison.

Thought I'd raise this 2003 thread from the dead. My second reason for doing this is because there may be someone in need of this information, and hopefully it is not out of date. The primary reason was that I was getting a little bored to say the least, with having to see the Off Road Bike Riding in Pattaya thread leap up at me as number one fromthe screen and continue evenly for days at such an intellectually stimulating level.....not that it became anything to do with bike riding. Still, if anyone has some up-to-date info on the procedures and processes of visiting any of the prisons in Thailand, I'd appreciate it.

Sorry expatchuc, I have to say that for something to be intellectually stimulating to me on this forum, the thread has to get down and dirty, about gutter level to appeal to me. Everything else, I find is rather above me. The off-road bike riding, unless it involves nude, mud-wrestling girl-riders and filthily-drenched and spattered nubiles cheering at every turn, just doesn't do it for me. My sincere apologies to serious followers of the straight sport. I do understand the appeal for some, but for me, I require a little more sensuality and hands-on experience in the activity to get my motor running, if you know what I mean. Something akin to slip and slide. And now, after this short interlude, back to the prisons.....................

I am definitely not guilty. My eye, the important one, only quivers for the real ladies. No reflection on the above-mentioned 'member'. I rest my case.............in luxurious squalor.
