Mmm.. Budejovice Budvar... now there's a "Bud" for me. Would still rather have a dark Velkopopovicke though. But I liked a cold Carlsberg in Bangkok, the climate isn't really one for heavier beers..

Look forward to trying out San Miguel.

No Carlsberg that is bad news as it's the only beer in LOS that didn't give me heartburn, a barkeep told me it was the only one that didn't contain tons of chemicals??

All is not lost though as I do like San Mig slurp a lot of it at the Sunday flip flop tea dances.

For anyone interested in the politics of this issue... here is a quick summary...

Carlsberg own 25% of BeerThai - the other 75% is owned by K.Charoen, the Mekhong whisky tycoon. BeerThai brews beer Chang that has about a 70% market share for beer in Thailand. It also has a 20 year license agreement with Carlsberg to produce any Carlsberg that is sold in Thailand.

Carlsberg and K.Charoen have been in dispute for quite some time and the matter is under arbitration in London.

The dispute covers a number of issues...

1. Beer Chang's dominance of the market was created by bundling the beer with the whisky (where K.Charoen has a 95% market share). Beer Chang is being sold into the market at below cost via a cross subsidy with the whisky. (Which explains why Chang has gone from 0% to 70% of the market in less than 10 years while Singha's market share has collapsed.)

2. K.Charoen has done little to expand Carlsberg in the market. Heinekin has made big strides in the premium market (maybe 80% market share out of total 8% premium beer market).

Bottom line for Carsberg is that they have seen little sales growth and no benefit from their holding in BeerThai.

They have accused K.Charoen of breaking their license agreement (unsure of the exact reasons here). If they win, Carlsberg will go to another bottler - Boonrawd (Singha) or Heinekin and Carlsberg sales will resume. If they lose, BeerThai will retain the rights to Carlsberg beer but Carlsberg will not manufacture any product in this country.

The chances of an amicable settlement are very slim (Carlsberg and K.Charoen have a longer running dispute over their 50:50 asian jv). Carlsberg is pretty irrelevent to K.Charoen in the greater scheme of things.

Production stopped six weeks ago. Thailand will be dry of Carlsberg by Songkran.

The whiskey king was too smart for Carlsberg.

A part of the deal was that Carlsberg would get a brewery to make Carlsberg. Carlsberg own 49% of that and a company in Hong Kong own 51%. Carlsberg didn't know that the whiskey king own that company in Hong Kong.

Carlsberg didn't want the whiskey kings family in the brewery and sack them.

The whiskey king lose face.

So he get his Hong Kong company to close the Brewery.

Take care when dealing with Thais

Yes, I'm sure Carlsberg entered into a business agreement with a company without bothering to find out who owns that business... Please...

Due diligence like that is too basic to be overlooked.

What is more likely is that whiskey king got a little face out of being linked with the Carlsberg, then through ignorance and ill-will let Heineken get the drop on him in the premium beer segment. I doubt that he lost any money, but you'd have to see the internals to know that for sure.
