Boomarang .... thanks for the numbers... now copied to the notes page of my Lonely Planet.

CCVB, I got very sick in Pattaya and needed to go to hospital... there were some US military staying in our hotel and they were fantasticly helpful for me... but to get to hospital it was a taxi... me on the floor of the taxi and my puke bucket on the seat of the taxi.... my head in the puke bucket.

The hospital and the bill were a very pleasant surpise.  The hospital (I think it was the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital I went to) was beautiful and I couldn't believe how efficient it was.  I can't remember what my bill was... but it was so little that I didn't even bother declaring it to the insurance company.

BoomARang, Ripmaster and X,

Good information there. Boom, you have already provided a lot of useful info. And I think your suggestion is great: to have a separate thread on medical aid and emergency. Maybe there is one already but since it is not apparent, we don't know about it. Such a topic could be upfront where  anyone can see it and access it immediately on need.

The posts by Ripmaster and X are really reassuring, as far as the news on overcharging and the facilities are concerned.

The only other requirement is we may need to have some emergency Thai phrases built into our diary as well so as to let the people in the immediate vicinty know what is happening or what we need.

As the experience of members shows, it is likely that it is the bar girls or our Thai girl companions who may need medical attention more than us since many of them are overworked, probably undernourished, and (probably again) mentally or emotionally troubled. We need to be prepared also for such times in order to rush medical attention promptly.

K-Man!
Great idea about an emergency info thread and an even better idea about phrases.  I'll leave it up to some one else to start the thread to figure out the best place for it but here are a couple of phrases to start things off.

get me a doctor  =  hai maw mae tenee
get me to the hospital  =  pai rong paiapbahn
sore stomach  =  jep thong
sore neck  =  jep khor
vomit  =  oo-aak

I appologize in advance if my transliterations suck.

I have needed a doctor 4 times in thailand. 3 times I went to the local clinic wherever I was and received excellent care, these places are always overstaffed and very cheap, no special farang price. The only thing strange is they had to get my height and weight before treating me, they usually have a 'nurse' who only does this, and I have always been off their scale for both of these (2m/110Kg) so they had to take my word for it. So just ask for the local clinic, unless you know that one of the places mentioned in an earlier post is nearby, who wants to be stuck in a bkk traffic jam when you are sick?

One time I got the hotel to get a doctor and that was ripoff time, 3000 baht just for the visit.

MacTheHappy, Sir,
If I ever pissed you off in the past, I'm sorry.  ;)

Seriously though, I agree, local clinics, for most things can be better, cheaper and more often than not, closer.

I have found the English ability may be lacking and I don't trust my Thai well enough to keep me out of ending up getting my pee pee wacked off but with a bit of sign language and a good Doctor, they can usually figure out what is wrong.  I can't talk to my car but I can fix it.  ;)

I'm glad some of you have had good experiences at Thai hospitals but you still have to trust your own instincts.  Over the years I have had occasion to visit the local hospitals a few times and the quality of doctors vary from the sublime to the ridiculous, still we all hear horror stories of medical incompetence from our own countries.

I once had to take a BG/GF to the emergency room after she drank a bottle of floor cleaner, she spewed all over the room and passed out cold as in the previous posts I thought she was dead.  I bundled her into a taxi and took her to the hospital where they calmly and efficiently pumped her stomach out and at my request kept her traquilised for 3 days.  Cost me about 6,000 baht but great service and my apartment floors were the cleanest they've ever been!

This is a very useful thread. May be someone would move it to the health matter file. Anyone has similar information for Phuket and BKK (areas where the bros like to stay) ?
