well, you know what mate?... I DONT KNOW! thats the whole point of my post. I want to know the names/websites of reputable diving schools and seeing as ive gained so much useful information from this forum before I thought I would ask on here. I think I trust most of the forum users opinions more than websites run by the schools/operators themselves. im going to be over there for anything up to eight weeks. is that long enough to become a competent diver? I DONT KNOW! thats why im asking on here. look mate, if you want an argument them do it via PM or something please. theres no point in flooding the forum with this childish bickering. and you have the audacity to call ME a troll and a flamer? i know there are no vegetarian sharks. I didnt know the characteristics or habits of the lepoard shark until somebody told me on this thread. I didnt know there were no great whites off thailsnd until somebody told me in this thread. im learning what I want to learn. im not trolling. please dont read my posts if theyre so offensive to you. im NOT politically correct by the way.

prsit, No arguments here. How many times do I have to say that your posts are not offensive? However when one starts a thread as you have it is either because: A) one is a troll, B) one is a nitwit, C) one is joking. I am most happy to hear it was 'C'. But starting a thread with a joke leaves no context to evaluate whether it is A, B, or C - and I have met some, foolish enough to get in 'over their heads' while learning to dive. While there are several diving afficionados here, myself included, who are very helpful, do learn to put more trust in the operator. I've never yet met one who doesn't take his work very seriously, and it is them in whose hands your very life will be. If you do take it seriously, you can get to be very proficient in eight weeks and open an incredible chapter in your life. Happy diving.

thanks ciaociao. while we were bitching like a couple of little catfish, someone else sent me a PM advising me to learn to dive in the UK as it will probably be cheaper and ill enjoy my time in LOS more. ive been diving once before, off a small island near split called brac, but it was quite a few years ago and I didnt appreciate it or take as much on board as I should have. I was more interested in getting out of the water, getting some pivo down my neck and finding the local brothel! what a waste. i think ive hit my mid life crisis early and I feel like kevin spacey in 'american beauty.' ive got a desire to learn new things all of a sudden. thats why ive taken up martial arts and want to learn to dive. im even thinking about trying yoga or feng shui (not joking anymore). i just think that lifes too short, and I need to start making the most of it now. lifes too short to argue with people you dont know on an internet forum too, so look after yourself and one day we might even chat about our experiences over a nice cold chang. cheers, prsit.

So you want to learn to dive? I would recommend learning in Thailand because: 1. It's cheap 2. The dive shops are full of experienced local and European divemasters 3. The water is warm so you only need a shorty wetsuit which is more for protection than because of water temperature (It was 30 deg C in the water last weekend) 4. the corals and reef fish etc. are great 5. It is very laid back for diving Where to go diving is up to you but as a general guide of rough prices you could check out the Open Water Diver course at a reputable Padi 5* dive shop. This would be 4 days including 1 day of schoolroom and swimming pool. You may get 6 dives over the period up to about 9 or 10m. This would cost about 12,000 Baht including all equipment, boat, lunch, soft drinks etc. After that dives would run at 1,200 to 2,500 Baht per day depending on how far you are going out etc. and will include 2 or 3 dives a day. As an Open Water Diver you will now be diving to 18m. This is quite sufficient in Thai waters to see reefs, coral and fish. Any deeper and your bottom time decreases. 18m is an economical maximum depth. "Where you go" is a question I am often asked in bars but in this context we will apply it to dive sites. Pattaya / Jomtien has some dive sites off the coast in various places, most of them suitable for training as they can be quite shallow. I saw some bamboo sharks around here a few months ago but vegetarian and only about 90cm long. This is not the best for coral etc. as it has been bleached by the effluent and pollution. Mermaid divers in Jomtien is a good dive shop. They also train instructors so there are plenty of willing dive buddies. They also have several boats of their own. When the second comes back from overhaul they will be able to run trips to islands off Sattahip again which is a bit better and some local wrecks. Their dive training is very good. If you go further afield then Ko Tao is a mecca for diving. It used to be a quiet place full of divers but is now a lot more popular but still not a lot in the evenings. Krabi is a good place to dive IMHO as the loacl dives are quite interesting. Good coral, fish, barracuda, sweetlips, lionfish etc. Plenty of Dive shops but the young blonde lady at Kon Tiki divers on Ao Nang beach has a nice boat, her boyfriend being the only one legged dive master I have met. Phi phi has some great dive sites and can be reached from either Phuket or Krabi on a day boat. These larger boats can take you to Shark Point or the King Cruiser wreck. Both worth visiting. Unfortunately man eating sharks are a decided rarity in Thai waters. If they do nip it is because you have scared them or they mistook you for a sardine. Lots of dive sites in Thailand. If you want to learn then any Padi dive shop can do it. The 5* places have additional equipment but the training should be the same. The diving off Queensland is even better. I saw some real big sharks off Cairns about 10 years ago but again not man eaters. Good luck, it is the lazy man's sport as you lazily flipper around.

Get certified first and then go on your shark hunting adventure. There are alot of half ass dive operators in S.E. Asia so try yo find a reputable company. I would recommend this small school on Koh Phangan http://www.chaloklum-diving.com/ or Dive Asia in Phuket. I have never seen a shark while diving in Thailand. The price of shark fin soup has helped wipe out most species of sharks.

Too right. I had shark fin once in HK and never again. It was OK to eat but the Chinese are gobbling up the shark population.

Duun Taa, duan taa, duan taa, taaaa, aaaaaa !!!! Sharks They will come by if you chum the waters for big game fish. Their sense of smell is great and would glady take handouts. Just come by my work place there are enough sharks in suits fighting over commissions to make shark fin soup. I'd gladly cut n paste em to the Andamann Sea with fresh paper cuts.
