Quote: from Gus on 1:41 am on Feb. 4, 2005 Is it possible to buy gold in Chinatown and sell it for a profit in the UK or are prices pretty similar? I just thought it may go to paying for some of my hols!
That might be possible, as the price paid for craftmanship is very low here and the gold price is closely based on the world gold price. But be aware that "Thai Gold" is much softer than the standard 18k or 24k gold back home, as has a higher percentage of gold content. I also have no idea on what regulations exist for tranporting gold across international borders. But I do remember hearing that India views transporting gold into its country even worse than bringing in drugs! Good luck.

You can make a profit on it as jewelry, 23k Thai gold is prized in the USA, probably same in UK. My friend sells a piece occasionally at 40% mark-up. Just be sure you get a certificate of authenticity. You won't have any problem with customs because it is jewelry, not bullion. Just declare it at it's value at purchase.

If you want to sell Thai gold on-line you can post it in an on-line auction format or sell it outright on my brothers site, (this site is related to this post) http://www.goldbay.com I do sell here the odd time and it sells good.

on almost every gold shops window, be it in china town or anywhere else, you will see three prices written in chalk on the window, the highest one, currently 7900, quotes their selling price, the medium one the buying price and the lowest one the pawning price. Interest rate is 3% per month, unless you know the owner. The process itself is fast and reliable, never experienced any inconveniences in any of the three transactions.

I'd say anyone who thinks they can make "good" money simply buying gold jewellery in Thailand and selling it at home is probably mistaken. Like any buy low sell high scheme you need a buyer - who it that going to be? Your local jewellery shop in farangland does not want it as the gold is of a different "standard". Thailand is a great place to buy gold jewellery for yourself or your lady since, as was pointed out, the labour cost is low. If you choose wisely you will get items that will be "valued" for insurance purposes at a price much higher than you paid - how you turn that into cash without breaking the fraud laws is the next question. Enjoy
