Some clues for Bangkok Chang:

- Nothing is private on the internet.
- You have no privacy. Period. Deal with it.
- Not only can an administrator read all messages, but he certainly has that right -- it's his system, isn't it?
- Why be concerned - most sysadmins have more important things to do than read your own messages.

FYI I have been Admin on more than five websites and at no time did I have access to Private Messages unless I trawled through the database backup. Anyone who has time for that needs to get a life.

I'm pleased to see BK has a life.

I do own a website which accepts credit card payment and I can assure you SOME information (passwords, card numbers) is private. Otherwise I would be a good deal wealthier than I am.

The idea that customers are told card numbers are protected and then to hand them out would be bad for business.

To infer that a message facility is private when it isn't is equally so. As an administrator I couldn't give a monkey's what people said in PM's as it wasn't on public view. Some people it seems are just downright nosey.

The comments of respected Ajarn members on another similar forum speaks for itself....

==================================

Could I take this chance to get a few opinions?

A friend forwarded an email to a group of people which included my off again on again farang GF.

Buried in that email was the username I use when I post on this website. FGF does a search and finds a year or so's worth of posts, general opinions and field reports. Prints the lot and make herself a neat little folder like a diary of the 18 months that we were apart.

Eventually has to let on how clever she has been and starts dropping facts in my lap until it all comes out. She clearly is having trouble dealing with how I spent my time when we were apart. She reacts badly if the word "Thailand" is used in a sentence. I'm tired of her trying to make me feel "guilty" about it.

Am I wrong to feel my privacy has been invaded or is she correct to feel alls fair since it was on the net? She might even read this post, I guess.

I'd have to say that all's fair on this one. If you put the information in a public place, you have to expect that the public may eventually read it. Of course, the real issue is making sure that you don't leak your handle (or at least have plausible deniability) to anyone that might get offended by your actions.

It's things like this that have me glad that the forum has gone "private."

There's a definite distinction between posting your messages to a group of people that have to make a small effort (going through the signup process) to view them, and posting it such that Google tracks and indexes them.

Am I correct in assuming that she found your posts (at least initially) through Google, and not by accessing the forum directly and using its search function?

I knew exactly where this was going, without even continuing past the above. In a nutshell, never, EVER put anything in an email that you do not ever want to come back and haunt you (this includes so-called private messages).

Period.

Anything beyond that, and it's your own fault, more or less, if it ends up being thrown in your face. As for your Farang GF, quite frankly, dump the cow-like, nosy creature for illustrating perfectly well what's wrong with her. If she was bothered by what you were doing when you were APART (I assume that means 'separated'), then you're dealing with one chick with might self-confidence problems, and you need to deport her to dumpsville. The fact that she's as nosy as that, is enough. Furthermore, exclude the friend who leaked your email onwards from any further communications. Simple as that (and if she's reading this, as I assume she is, then "Buh Bye, girlfriend!"

Bangkok Chang: the 'private' in 'private message' implies that it is communication NOT on the public forum. Anything beyond that is you splitting hairs over definitions, and if you have indeed as much experience in message forums and websites as you say you do, then you would know that. Simple as that. Besides, 'private-but-not-quite-as-private-as-really-private message' doesn't roll off the tongue as well.

>Otherwise I would be a good deal wealthier than I am.

A good administrator doesn't even joke about that, as credit card numbers are a serious subject (and a felony-type offense, if abused).

It all goes back to "You have no privacy. period."

The next time your bank send you a letter marked "Private" I presume you have no problem with your G/f opening it....

If you want your info secure then use software to do it.

For your computer I suggest http://www.securstar.com/ their product drivecrypt is great.

For email use PGP http://www.pgpi.org/products/pgp/versions/freeware/

Unless you give out your password or use a feeble simple password you will be locked up safe.

Of course this doesn't prevent the HUMAN error such as putting your handle in your email.

I don't even have my bank or credit card mail me my statement anymore. They just email me that my statement is ready then I login to get it. Safer then the mail.

If you don't know the difference between postal mail (which makes it a felony to open another person's mail), or the lack of privacy on the internet (which any administrator worth his salt would know about), then there's really nothing else I can tell you...

... Oh, and if my GF opens my bank statement, it *IS* my fault for not having it mailed to a secure location, or for leaving it lying around where she can get to it - that is, if I bothered with a live-in girlfriend (in which case I would know the privacy risks involved).

Anyway, like I said, you're stabbing at insubstantials at this point - I think all that needs to be said about this issue, has been said.

As a user of TRUE broadband I had hoped that the cookie issue would have been resolved long before now. I was told that the issue was being looked at. The good news is that the website hasn't logged me in as ManuelBkk or Edenpapa lately. BK maintains that this is not any fault of the Ikonboard software. Ok Whatever - but problems still exist. I am still getting the "loop syndrome". Ikonboard software asks me to log on. I do that. It recognises me & thanks me for logging in. (I use 15 min timeout). Then - for example - I click "Last 25" & I get sent back to the log on page --ADINFINITUM. Constant loop. Dog chasing his tail.

So the question becomes - when will these technical issues be resolved? & Yes this relates to the title of the thread. I have had access to other users Private Messages. Unintended & unwanted.

Oooh, you have no idea how much of a potential for fun can be had with the right access

Seriously, I have had the 'infinite loop' happen to me as well, that despite being logged on, the system returns me to the logon prompt the moment I pick any selection.

I found that somehow the system seems to ignore the default 15 minute setting, and by manually altering the setting to another time period, it would work, and finally properly log me in.

See if that makes any difference for you - I'm convinced it is a caching issue, and I've forwarded a few caching (no-cache) settings to BK that may or may not make a difference (aside from Pragma: no-cache)

When the above was happening to me, I certainly wasn't on TRUE - but coming in from Southern California.
